**Job Purpose**
The Head of Student Support and Welfare (UMS) will lead the Student Support Team to provide pastoral care to medical students through a range of support, engagement, and wellbeing guidance. Working closely with the UMS Senior Management Team in providing leadership in the ongoing development and expansion of support services provided.
The post attracts 3 PAs and reports to the Head of the UMS, Professor Malcolm Shepherd. The post is a secondary appointment for an initial term of 4 years, sitting alongside the postholder’s underlying substantive role, with appropriate workload adjustments being made to accommodate.

**Responsibilities**
1. Provide strategic oversight and leadership to support and deliver the ongoing organisation and development of UMS Support Services in liaison with UMS colleagues.
2. Providing expert advice, guidance, and pastoral care to medical students and acting as the first point of call to be approached by student who are experiencing problems and signposting to other university/NHS services as appropriate.
3. To act as a link with national committees including the Medical Schools Council and General Medical Council to implement national initiatives.
4. Work closely with other University of Glasgow Support Services including Counselling and Psychological Services, Disability Services, Crisis Team, and Occupational Health.
5. Keeping abreast of relevant GMC and University of Glasgow policies, procedures, and codes of practice and share updates through various platforms and committee group
6. To lead and chair the Student Support and Student Concerns Committee and Professionalism Concerns Committee
7. Work closely with year leads to assist students with significant academic and personal issues.
8. Attend other UMS committees - as required for the execution of the role.
9. Organising recruitment, leading and coordinating the team of Advisers of Studies.
10. To assist Advisers of Studies with required training, instructions, advice, and support as required..
11. To act as Chief Adviser representing the UMS at the central University student wellbeing and inclusion committee

**Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience**

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**:

A1 MBChB or equivalent and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in specialty or GP training.
A2 Good understanding of the stressors and challenges faced by undergraduate medical students.
A3 Knowledge of University of Glasgow Student Support Services.

**Desirable**:

B1 Knowledge and understanding of the UMS curriculum.
B2 An understanding of educational governance and quality assurance.

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1 Ability to support students in distress, with academic difficulties, professionalism concerns, and welfare issues, helping to contain, problem solve, and signpost to professional services when appropriate.
C2 Experience in leading and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
C3 Confidence in management of students presenting with risk to self or others within the university environment.
C4 Excellent communications skills.
C5 Strong interpersonal skills.

**Desirable**:

D1 Previous experience of providing student support.

**Experience**

**Essential**:

E1 Experience as a medical educator.
E2 Experience of providing pastoral care and support to medical students.

**Desirable**:

F1 Experience of leadership and management in an UMS context.
F2 Experience of delivering educational events and workshops.


**Terms & Conditions**
Salary remuneration for this role will be three sessions per week, or equivalent payment on the GP Educators scale.
This post is part time (12 hrs per week
- Monday-Friday) and open ended.
