Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Full time

We are delighted to be offering a full-time Band 5 Trainee Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAP) post within our Adult Inpatients Service based at St Nicolas Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. The post will work into two of our acute wards. We are looking for an enthusiastic psychology graduate, with interest and experience in long term mental health issues, to help provide specialist psychological input into the ward. The post involves undertaking a Level 7 qualification in Clinical Associate Psychology. This is a structured programme of learning including personal study, academic work, research, placement learning and assessment. The CAP training course will take place over 18 months through Teesside University, and requires full-time commitment between work and study.

Adult Mental Health Inpatient Services provide multi-disciplinary care using a biopsychosocial model for service users over the age of 18. The rehabilitation service provides care for service users with long term, complex mental health needs, who require short to medium term intensive rehabilitation. Service users have often experienced trauma in their lives, and have a range of difficulties including psychosis, personality difficulties, neurodiversity and learning disabilities, risk to self and others, forensic issues and behaviours that can be challenging for teams.

Apprentices are employed by Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust while they complete training. Trainees are required to fulfil both academic and clinical requirements, including the end point assessment to qualify and to progress to Band 6, usually within 18 months. There is provision for extension agreed with the service and university where there are exceptional circumstances or mitigations (within the employer’s duties of the Equality Act 2010).

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary context to undertake specialised psychological assessments, treatments, and other types of clinical intervention appropriate to this level of training with individual clients/ groups of clients. They will work as a semi-autonomous practitioner with weekly supervision from an experienced HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist.

The successful applicant will manage a caseload and be responsible for providing effective evidence-based care in line with national and local guidelines. They will support the service in the delivery of training and service development initiatives.

We aim to attract and retain a diverse, talented and committed workforce, who are caring and compassionate, and therefore able to meet the demands of the modern NHS now and in the future. In return we can offer a dynamic working environment in which to build a career.

The post holder will be part of a supportive psychology team which provides Acute, Rehabilitation, and Older Adult inpatient services for Newcastle and Gateshead. The team is part of a valued trust wide psychological service which has a range of regular meetings and support activities to ensure professional governance and to promote evidence based and innovative psychologically informed care.

The post involves providing specialist psychological assessment, including neuropsychological assessment with service users. The post holder will support the development of collaborative psychological formulations and deliver psychological interventions with service users and families, working as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will provide support to multidisciplinary staff working with service users through supervision, team formulation, and contribute towards complex risk assessment and care planning, the development of positive behaviour support plans and provision of reflective practice sessions and training.
