CAMHS Inpatient Social Worker

London, United Kingdom Southwark Council Full time

Are you seeking an opportunity to be part of a service dedicated to supporting adolescents with complex mental health needs?

If yes, we have the perfect role for you

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced social worker to join its multi-professional CAMHS inpatient team on a 12 month secondment/fixed-term contract. This opportunity arises due to an upcoming maternity leave, with the successful candidate covering the role for a period of 12 months from September 2024 to September 2025 (exact dates to be confirmed).

About the Service:

We have an exciting challenge available at the Bethlem Adolescent Unit, based at the renowned Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham. Please note that free parking is available on site.

This inpatient facility provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for young individuals aged 12 to 18 years, addressing a wide range of acute mental health concerns, including significant mood disorders, OCD, self-harm, neurodevelopmental needs and early onset psychosis.

Formerly known as the Snowsfields Adolescent Unit, this service has undergone a temporary merger with the Bethlem Adolescent Unit. However, an ambitious plan is in place to relocate the unit to the cutting-edge Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People in Southwark in 2025.

About the Team:

You will be joining a small, well established and supportive team of social workers employed by Southwark Children's Services to serve the inpatient CAMHS services at South London and Maudsley NHS. You will benefit from regular supervision provided by the Team Manager or Senior Social Worker within the team.

The CAMHS inpatient social work team, seconded by Southwark Children's Services, has a long-standing tradition of delivering exceptional social work services across the CAMHS wards, including the general adolescent units and the psychiatric intensive care unit (CAMHS PICU), spanning the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital sites.

About the Role:

As the ward social worker, you will provide high quality social work services to children and adolescents with complex mental health challenges, as well as their families and caregivers.

Working closely with the unit's multidisciplinary staff team, you will contribute to comprehensive assessments, treatment planning and care coordination for young individuals admitted to the unit.

Your responsibilities will encompass discharge planning and liaising with local authorities and community services to ensure seamless continuity of care.

The successful candidate will take the lead in safeguarding matters on the ward, working in conjunction with multidisciplinary colleagues and maintaining liaisons with regional and national services.

While initially based at the Bethlem hospital site, you will eventually transition to the state of the art Pears Maudsley Centre in 2025, requiring ongoing flexibility to work across these sites and teams.

About You:

We require a qualified social worker registered with the Social Work England for this full-time CAMHS inpatient social worker position and you will have:

  • Post qualifying experience of working in statutory child and family settings, and with children or young people with mental health difficulties.
  • Knowledge of statutory requirements in safeguarding and mental health.
  • An interest in developing your skills in a CAMHS setting and be committed to delivering excellent child and family-centred care. You must have the ability to work alongside a multi-disciplinary team, including nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, family therapy, and psychiatry.
  • Good literacy, communication, initiative and problem-solving skills are essential.

The role provides multiple opportunities to upskill and develop yourself personally and professionally within the field of CAMHS. Come and join us
