Ocean Career: National Oceanography Centre Research Scientist in Ocean and Climate Physics

ECO Posted On October 9, 2023

We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC)—the UK's center of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We are a national research organization, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.

We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community whose focus is on improving the world in which we live. Our work is balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviors and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.

We have a rich history dating back to 1949, and our future has never looked more exciting as we aim to be the world’s most innovative oceanographic institution.

About the role

We are looking to recruit a talented and motivated ocean and climate scientist into the Ocean Circulation and Processes group in Southampton. The Ocean Circulation and Processes group forms part of the wider Marine Physics and Ocean Climate group at NOC.

The successful candidate will work within an international team exploring drivers and mechanisms of heat and freshwater exchanges between the subpolar and subtropical North Atlantic and the Arctic. The specific objective of this role is to evaluate influences of the North Atlantic Ocean and atmospheric circulations on European weather and climate. The analyses will be based on a hybrid mixture of observational data and new model output. Application of novel data analysis tools and methods, such as machine learning approaches, will be encouraged.

The role is offered as an open-ended Research Scientist level (Band 6) position. In this permanent position, the successful candidate will have the support to continue to develop their skills and career, to grow their research portfolio and to develop collaborations nationally and internationally. They will have the opportunity to engage with ongoing research programs at NOC as well as having the time to develop their own projects, research direction and science leadership skills.

About you

We welcome applications from candidates with experience in physical oceanography, meteorology, climate physics, mathematics, physics, or related subjects. You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in a discipline relevant to these subjects, and have a strong interest in ocean and climate research. You will have a portfolio of output that demonstrates your ability to apply a range of data analysis skills. You will have experience in delivering high-quality scientific outputs and in generating new knowledge, supported by a track record of peer-reviewed publications. You will have excellent communication skills and enjoy working in large interdisciplinary teams and exchanging knowledge.
