At the University of Southampton's School of Ocean and Earth Science we are pursuing a major investment initiative, seeking to build on our international research profile and research-led education programmes to confront the most pressing scientific and societal challenges in the natural environment.

We invite applications from individuals who are pursuing outstanding research questions across the following: modelling the response of ice sheets or the hydrological cycle to climate forcing; climate interconnections between the atmosphere and terrestrial, marine or cryosphere environments; paleoclimate perspectives on climate dynamics and natural variability; detection and prediction of climate hazards and ecological change.

We seek candidates who have an international profile that brings exciting new dimensions to the thriving research programs offered across the school at the University's Waterfront Campus , National Oceanography Centre Southampton; home to the Marine Autonomous Robotic Systems fleet, and with strong links to the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, Sustainability and Resilience Institute, GeoData institute, and world-class supercomputer facilities across the University. We host state of the art facilities in climate science, including extensive clean lab and mass spectrometry suites. Southampton is also home to the UK research vessel fleet and a critical mass of sea-going scientists with a global footprint of research including the polar regions. We encourage applications from scientists who would use existing facilities and help build our facilities in the school and across the university.

In SOES, we lead the prestigious NERC INSPIRE Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) and FLOOD Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), and the EPSRC funded Mathematics for Future Climate CDT. We are home to one the largest graduate schools in OES in the world, with >130 PhD students.

ABOUT YOU

You will demonstrate passion for education and an ability to enhance the delivery and development of our growing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Geology and Environmental Geoscience, including field courses in the UK and overseas.

We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role, and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We particularly encourage applications from people who identify with one or more of the following: Black, Asian, a minority ethnic background, coming from a lower socio-economic background, LGBTQ+, a woman or having a disability as these identities are currently underrepresented in our working community.

What we can offer you

We are an ambitious, mutually supportive academic community and are passionate about creating an environment where everyone can achieve their full potential in education, research and enterprise. We hold departmental Athena SWAN bronze award coupled to an institutional Athena SWAN silver award. We value diversity and equality and recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability, or illness. We offer generous holiday allowance and additional University closure days, subsidised health and fitness facilities and access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).
