We are seeking a motivated oceanographer to join our Ocean Circulation and Processes team within the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate group ( ) in Southampton. In this Research Scientist role, you will be investigating North Atlantic circulation and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). You will work on developing new methods for observing the AMOC using observations, numerical modelling and artificial intelligence techniques as part of the MEZCAL (Methods for Extending the horiZontal Coverage of the Amoc Latitudinally and retrospectively), RAPID ( ) and OSNAP ( ) projects.
In this role you will carry out independent research, developing your own body of work and expertise. You will have the opportunity for attendance to international project meetings and conferences, as well as a week-long visit to develop collaboration with US partners. Candidates should also have a strong track record in physical oceanography research, ideally with a focus on Atlantic circulation and processes. The candidate should be experienced using observational datasets, reanalysis products, and model output in their research, as well as experience in (or a strong interest) in applying machine learning techniques to ocean dynamics.
