Clinical Cardiology Research Fellow

Brighton East Sussex, United Kingdom University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279) Full time

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and appropriately skilled applicant to join our department as a clinical research fellow in cardiology. This is a fully funded 2-year post that will lead to the registration and completion of an MD thesis. In addition, the research fellow will assist in the delivery of our large research portfolio, gaining experience in several ongoing multi-centre research trials conducted by our NIHR cardiology department.

The role will be based out of the Clinical Investigation and Research Unit (CIRU) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital with a close liaison between the Cardiology Research team and the Cardiology Department of the Sussex Cardiac Centre. You will have weekly meetings with your main supervisor (Professor Hildick-Smith) but will also meet with co-supervisors as necessary.

The post will provide excellent clinical trial and research training. The post holder will also have the opportunity to gain further skills in relation to the project they will lead on. For a suitably trained applicant, this could include exposure and opportunities within structural heart intervention and TAVI.

This post is fully funded, and the successful applicant will be remunerated in line with current salary, excluding on-call. There will be an opportunity for suitably trained applicants to join the Cardiology Registrar on-call rota should they wish.

Main duties of the job

The research fellow will be working as a member of the CIRU research team on a project relating to their MD study. In parallel, they will be enlisted as a sub-PI for a variety of other projects that they will assist in the delivery of.

In terms of personal research, the post holder, in conjunction with their supervisor, will:
  1. Develop the project hypothesis and experimental design, writing and submitting any necessary ethics applications.
  2. Liaise with collaborators.
  3. Keep detailed records of experimental work.
  4. Present research at local and international meetings.
  5. Write up the research for publication.
  6. Register for and complete a medical doctorate degree.
  7. Abide by the University's regulations relating to the conduct of a medical doctorate degree programme.
  8. Submit the research as a thesis for a medical doctorate degree.
In addition, the PGME holds a wide variety of courses, tutorials, and seminars with local and visiting speakers which are organised by the specialty departments for clinical staff of all disciplines. The successful applicant will be expected to take an active role in both postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and in the training of clinical staff as appropriate. The department and unit are involved in a number of audits, and the post holder is encouraged to either participate in these audits or start new ones.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This post is for a full-time research doctor based in the CIRU at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and will be for 24 months. It will involve two aspects: firstly the application and delivery of a project which will result in a completed and awarded MD thesis. Secondly, involvement in the other ongoing projects within the department to lead to their successful delivery.

Our cardiac research team comprises 10 research nurses, 1 admin support, and 1 research practitioner. The clinical lead is Professor Hildick-Smith and the nursing lead is Ms Nicola Skipper. The unit undertakes studies in coronary, structural, surgical, EP, and heart failure with all consultants actively participating or leading in research. At present, there are 21 actively recruiting studies, 9 studies in setup, and approximately 500 patients in active follow-up. The complexity of these studies ranges from stent registries to phase-3 CTIMP RCTs and First in Man structural heart devices. There are both commercial and non-commercially led studies with University Sussex Hospitals named lead site for 9 of these. The post-holder will be actively involved in these other projects as a named sub-PI. They will be involved in recruitment, data collection, and governance and will facilitate their successful delivery.

We are keen for the post-holder to maintain their clinical training during the project. As such, they will be involved in the on-call registrar rota and there will be opportunities to be involved in developing their clinical skills further. This post is not recognised for training. However, all posts will be subject to stringent recording of educational content, clinical activity, and experience. The maintenance of good logbooks and learning portfolios is a requirement of each post. Study leave will be provided in accordance with current guidelines. The successful candidate will be encouraged to utilise the full quota of study leave to pursue their Continued Medical Education.
