SWASFT are recruiting for a substantive Deputy Medical Director for 1 day (2 programmed activities) per week. The Deputy Medical Director is a senior clinical role working as part of the Medical Director team and will deputise for the Medical Director(s) as needed internally and externally. The areas of work will be defined by mutual agreement and be heavily influenced by SWASFT's strategic plan and the directorate's associated objectives. Areas of responsibility will include, as a minimum:

  • Events medical cover clinical leadership and governance
  • Line management of Trust Event Doctors
  • To be a Medical Director lead for an ICB area

Applicants must be in good standing with the General Medical Council on either the GP or specialist register and have significant evidence of clinical experience in the delivery of urgent and emergency care. Experience of medical or clinical leadership within the ambulance service or another NHS organisation and an understanding of ambulance service structure and function, including the relationship with the wider healthcare system, is critical.

Main duties of the job
  • Lead through example, setting and maintaining high standards of clinical leadership and as a professional role model in the service
  • Support the Medical Directors and Executive Medical Director (EMD) to ensure that statutory and mandatory duties of the Trust are discharged according to their areas of responsibility.
  • Support the implementation of the Trust's strategic aims, particularly the elements that will benefit from medical input.
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive MD and Medical Directorate to ensure that there is strong infrastructure of medical leadership and medical representation within the Trust, being mindful of succession planning, and ensuring the full spectrum of urgent, emergency, and critical care are represented.
  • Promote a positive safety-focused culture, seeking assurances where appropriate regarding the quality and safety of clinical care in the organization.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Post graduate medical qualification: MRCGP, FRCEM or equivalent
  • Substantive consultant or GP equivalent role
  • Current membership of the Performers List (which will include identification, registration and presence on the GP register of the General Medical Council) or on the specialist register for Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine or Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine
  • License to practice and be in good standing with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom
  • Diploma in Urgent Care or Immediate Medical Care
  • Membership Royal College of Emergency Medicine
  • Command training at operational, tactical and strategic levels
Experience
  • Evidence of significant (over 5 years) clinical experience in the delivery of Urgent and Emergency Care
  • Evidence of clinical supervision of both doctors in training and allied health care professionals
  • Experience of medical or clinical leadership role within ambulance service or other NHS organisations
  • Can demonstrate experience of clinical team leadership to a high level
  • Experience of providing welfare support
  • Experience of major incident management in a real or exercise setting including MIMMS or HMIMMS plus SWASFT Medical Advisor training
  • Experience of ambulance services in the NHS setting
Skills, Knowledge, Ability
  • An ability to work under pressure but to recognise personal limits and the limits of others
  • Can demonstrate an ability to lead change through audit and research
  • Familiarity with front line Ambulance Equipment, HART and Critical Care resources
  • Familiarity with other emergency services response arrangements
