Post Anaesthetic Care Practitioner Band 5 Fixed Term 12 months ( this post may become substantive). 5 hours per week An exciting opportunity has arisen at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) for a registered nurse to join the Theatre Recovery team.


We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to work within our busy Theatre Recovery and Pacu units. We provide an in depth induction and an excellent preceptorship package for both newly qualified and experienced applicants.


The successful applicant will work as part of our theatre team who cover Theatre Recovery, Pacu, Opera and Pain clinic. To be an accountable practitioner, taking every opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence in all aspects of peri- operative care for orthopaedic and general surgical patients.


To provide excellent nursing care for all patients requiring post operative monitoring.


To undertake Recovery, Pacu/Opera and Pain duties as required, meeting all service delivery requirements.

Support staff under your supervision (theatre support workers, trainee operating department practitioners, student nurses) and act as an effective role
Ensure rigorous adherence to infection control practices including hand hygiene and universal/standard

Personal/Professional Development:


Identify personal and professional needs for career development of self and junior staff via the Trust appraisal programme and the NHS knowledge and skills
Support, supervise and act as a preceptor/mentor to junior staff and
Demonstrate a willingness to become an approved assessor for basic and post-basic students and participate in teaching programmes for other team members.

Recovery Duties:


Ensure patients receive appropriate pain and nausea management whilst in recovery, including the initiation of PCA following Trust/departmental guidance.
This is inclusive of managing patients in the immediate post-operative phase who has e.g. a laryngereal mask or and Gudel airway in place. The practitioner reports immediately, any adverse changes in the patients condition or any other aspect of concern as identified in the NEWS score as appropriate. Practices nurse led discharge i.e. discharges patients from the recovery unit to the ward area. The practitioner will implement a care plan for the continuing care of patient on the ward and provide a safe and effective handover of the patients peri-operative journey to the ward nursing staff, as per departmental protocol.
The practitioner completes the recovery competency template through the stages novice, proficient and expert.
If a patients post-operative status warrants transfer to a Critical Care bed the practitioner will, under the direct supervision of the senior practitioner, work with/support the anaesthetist responsible for the patients care until the patient is discharged from the recovery area.
The practitioner will use their knowledge, clinical and analytical skills at the bedside and alert the anaesthetist, should the patients condition deteriorate and warrant medical opinion/advice.
Registered nurse, current NMC registration (if RN)
