Commercial Director Job Description

We are seeking a Commercial Director to inspire and evolve our client’s commercial function. This role will form part of the Operational Leadership Team and will report to the Managing Director of the business. The primary focus of this role will be to deliver commercial oversight and control across the client portfolio. You’ll oversee the commercial lifecycle from early engagement with the client facing teams, shaping the future of commercial offers to clients, through winning work with innovative commercial approaches to ultimately delivering value to clients and sustainable revenue for the business.

Your purpose:

  1. You’ll be an accomplished functional leader and experienced commercial professional, able to balance a busy business as usual function, while transforming ready for the future.
  2. You will be an integral part of the divisional leadership team, guiding the way to achieving long-term strategic goals.
  3. Work closely with the client facing teams to develop new business development opportunities through innovative commercial structures - actively shaping the future commercial offerings of the business, within the bounds of the corporate risk appetite.
  4. Be a driving motivator in creating profitable growth through the operationalisation of commercial strategies - keeping ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes, by driving innovative commercial solutions.
  5. Deliver guidance and support to secure new contracts with the client facing teams through a motivated team of commercial professionals and embed risk management frameworks that safeguard the financial interests while ensuring client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Stay ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes to drive innovative commercial solutions.
  2. Influence regional and global commercial policies and processes to maximize their value to the business and create space to meet the evolving client needs.
  3. Take ownership of the divisional commercial risk profile and mitigation, including supporting processes.
  4. Act as the point of coordination for Legal – with a particular focus on contract approvals and claims.
  5. Review other regional divisions as an objective reviewer for large and complex opportunities (Red Reviewer).
  6. Manage key corporate systems that support the commercial processes - such as iGATE, PAS.
  7. Support the Supply Chain team in the execution of contracts and commercial engagements with partners and suppliers.
  8. Grow a team of innovative commercial professionals (currently 4 FTE) nurturing future commercial talent across the division.
  9. Share commercial skills and knowledge across the division through the provision of knowledge sharing.
  10. Build relationships with key leaders across the division to understand and develop the future demand and requirement for the commercial function.
  11. Ensure an alignment to the purpose, values, and aspirations in everything that’s done commercially.

What you can bring:

  1. Experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in a growing business within consultancy or professional services.
  2. Ability to operate as a divisional senior leader, as well as a commercial expert.
  3. Passion for people, being an ally for the People and Culture aspirations.
  4. Record of working successfully with large public sector bodies such as the Ministry of Defence.
  5. Experience in finding solutions that balance internal company risk appetite with meeting evolving client commercial needs.

Overview

Position – Commercial Director – Permanent

Location – Bristol, Aldershot, Cheltenham, London, Manchester

Salary – up to £150k
