Position Overview:  The Human Resources Generalist is a multifaceted position that will lead and be responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting all human resource functions. This will include, but is not limited to, updating policies and procedures, maintaining legislative compliance, establishing best practices, industry trends and best practices, employee/labour relations, benefits administration, full-cycle recruitment and selection, onboarding and Health and Safety. Additionally, this position will develop strategies in concert with the leadership team for the organization's growth, lead in fostering a positive and engaged culture and provide insight and support to develop management and all departments while working collaboratively in a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field; CHRP designation is an asset
  • 5+ years of proven experience in an HR Generalist role, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Competent with HRIS and various Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and best practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and persuasion skills
  • Health & Safety training, including Joint Health & Safety Committee education/experience
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development within the HR profession

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Accountability

  • Serve as a visible and credible ambassador fostering heightened external and internal awareness and motivation that supports the brand, mission and values
  • Provide strong relational leadership in all interactions
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings or events as required
  • Ensure all legal, safety and organizational risks are mitigated and dealt with appropriately
  • Ensure all actions are proactive, responsive and effective in resolving conflicts, creating a collaborative team environment and safe workplace
  • Strictly adhere to all professional college and ethical guidelines
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety policies and procedures are current and practiced
  • Ensure compliance with confidentiality, conflict of interest and all relevant cultural and legal requirements.

Human Resources Administration

  • Implement and administer organization policies, procedures and legislation and advise and mentor staff and managers on interpretation and administration and practice of policies
  • Maintain employee files and ensure compliance with all requirements
  • Ensure organization compliance with all legislatively required training
  • Maintain, enter and manage information in the HRIS and other databases
  • Support Records Management program; identify and process documents for archiving or destruction
  • Maintain organization of policies, procedures and forms; keep current documents available

Benefits Administration

  • Administer employee benefits programs, including health insurance retirement plans, and other perks
  • Assist employees with benefit-related questions and concerns
  • Coordinate enrollment and all administrative functions

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Full cycle recruitment and selection including screening resumes, interviewing, reference checking, preparing letters of offer and onboarding
  • Administer and advise on all leaves of absences, including maternity/parental, short-term, and other leaves

Training and Development

  • Identify training needs and coordinate training programs
  • Collaborate with the department heads to create professional development plans
  • Track and report on employee training initiatives

Employee Engagement

  • Contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing employee engagement
  • Organize and participate in employee events and activities
  • Solicit and analyze employee feedback to improve the work environment
  • Promote a positive and inclusive workplace culture

Safety

  • Responsible for the safety function including, but not limited to, coordinating safety training; maintaining safety training tracking log; dealing with all safety incidences such as workplace illness/injuries, managing online safety training, etc.
  • Administering all workplace injuries and WSIB claims including RTW programs
  • A member of the Health and Safety and Fire Safety Committee: ensure all employment and risk management compliance is met
  • Participate in workplace investigations

Labour/Employee Relations

  • Handles labour relations inquiries and situations
  • Participate in labour management meetings and is responsible for fostering an appropriate relationship with the union (CLAC)
  • Responsible for managing the grievance and arbitration process
  • Assist managers with the interpretation and application of collective agreement, polices and all applicable legislation
  • Work with the union (CLAC) to ensure compliance with the collective agreement.

Performance Management

  • Support the performance appraisal process, including goal setting and performance reviews
  • Provide guidance to managers and employees on performance-related matters
  • Assist in the development and implementation of performance improvement plans and processes and manage the disciplinary matrix
  • Manage correspondence with other HR support systems, legal, and independent agencies such as the WSIB
