Oldmeldrum, United Kingdom Steer Energy Full time

At Steer Energy, we are passionate about understanding challenges and solving them. Our proven track record is based on working with national and international clients operating in sectors as diverse as electricity, hydrogen, water, medical, gas and nuclear.

To support our work, we are looking to recruit an R&D Engineer. This position will be based at our site in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. The role will also have strong ties to our site in Gloucestershire.

As a R&D Engineer, the role will support a wide range of Steer projects. Previous projects include: developing “keyhole surgery” tools for remotely inspecting ageing assets; developing tooling to enable an emergency response to network damage; investigating methods and technologies for minimising the impact of street works on the public, ensuring that they are accessible for all (www.street-score.com); and examining technologies to manage ageing infrastructure in nuclear facilities.

You will also be delivering projects that contribute to the UK’s drive to net-zero by 2050. This includes assisting with the UK Governments’ long-term industrial and low carbon strategies, and supporting the Gas Network Operators (National Gas, SGN, Cadent, etc.) trial hydrogen use in practice.

The Roles

The role requires working within a small but growing dynamic unit at Steer Energy to complete a range of varied projects. As part of this group, the successful candidate will be involved in all stages of our projects from conception to delivery, including planning, researching, and developing concepts, engineering and/or preparing and carrying out testing and qualification. The role will also require the candidate to support product approvals such as UKCA and other 3rd party processes.

Core Activities

The core activities for this role include:

  • Supporting the successful delivery of technically complex projects
  • Investigating and researching new technologies, processes and products
  • Supporting the development and execution of challenging practical experiments, as well as analysing and developing a theoretical understanding of the results
  • Designing, building, adapting and using experimental equipment and products both in the laboratory and in the field
  • Supporting, and working with other team members to achieve project goals
  • Providing written and oral reporting of results in both a formal and informal setting
  • Field-trialling new products
  • Contributing to the safe running of the workshop and labs

Candidate Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering degree (or similar) with cross-discipline experience
  • Demonstrable experience in delivering the core activities mentioned above to a high standard
  • Demonstrable experience in writing high-quality technical reports, risk assessments, method statements, and other customer-focused communications
  • Have the ability to make the right decisions to facilitate rapid project progress often with little or conflicting data.
  • Demonstrable experience in project management and leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Hands-on practical skills in manufacturing prototypes and setting up experimental equipment
  • Strong numerical reasoning, written and verbal English skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, being able to communicate confidently at all levels in the company
  • Demonstrable ownership of projects and products

Our Ways of Working

To be considered for this role, you should be able to demonstrate that you can reflect Steer Energy’s core values:

  • Driven by technical excellence with strong attention to detail
  • Happy to work as a team, but confident in driving your own productivity
  • Always looking for opportunities for personal and professional improvement
  • Comfortable with challenges and able to express yourself constructively when challenged
  • Positive and proactive in your approach to achieving solutions, viewing being wrong as an opportunity to advance your knowledge

Benefits

By developing people who know their purpose and value, we avoid being a company that focuses purely on a spreadsheet or “the bottom line”.

As a member of the Steer Energy team, you will receive:

  • A competitive salary that is commensurate with your experience and expertise
  • Clear career progression and opportunities for development
  • 25 days of holiday entitlement per year, plus 8 bank holidays
  • Private healthcare coverage and company pension

Flexibility

For this role, Steer are open to discussions on how it may be delivered in a flexible manner. It is anticipated that this role could be delivered on a part-time basis (70-80% time).

Steer is an Equal Opportunity Employer and gives consideration for employment to qualified applicants without regard to gender, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, cultural background, social group, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, age or political opinion.
