The successful candidate will be part of a team of 7 MR clinical scientists delivering a range of scientific services to providers of clinical and research MRI services within Leeds and surrounding region. The 14 systems supported across Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and the University of Leeds are a mixture of 1.5T and 3T including a dedicated radiotherapy MRI planning scanner and an intraoperative system. Further systems are in other Trusts and support is also provided to other academic institutions and CDCs.

The clinical work of the group is wide ranging and the group also has strong academic links with the University of Leeds providing research support to systems including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and radiotherapy scanners. There will be opportunities to participate in research for interested candidates.

HCPC registration as a clinical scientist is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide technical and scientific MRI support to the Trust and to external customers. They will be involved in and develop multiple aspects of the MR physics service including:
  1. MR safety advice (e.g. providing advice and support for patients with passive and active implants, development of local procedures)
  2. Site planning
  3. Procurement
  4. Protocol development
  5. Acceptance testing
  6. QA
  7. Complex clinical scan support
  8. Teaching and training

There will be opportunities to develop more focused expertise in specific clinical areas and to be involved in research. The role will involve rewarding work with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. radiographer, radiologists, clinicians, cardiac physiologists, cardiologists) where everybody's contribution is valued.

Job responsibilities
To provide expert scientific advice and support for the MRI services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. A high level of expertise in safety aspects of MRI is essential. Specific additional areas of expertise will include one or more of the following: neuroradiology, oncology, musculoskeletal, cardiac, radiotherapy MR, site planning, quality assurance, magnetic resonance research and innovation. Duties to include:
  1. Equipment installation
  2. Acceptance
  3. Quality assurance and quality control
  4. Protocol development and implementation within their area of expertise

To deputise for the head of MR physics and deputise for the Trust MR Safety Expert. To take responsibility for the work of other physicists and related staff from the group, or those seconded to it and to direct their work as required. To develop effective working relationships with senior clinical staff in the Trust and other staff within the department.

To lead, develop, and plan selected technical and scientific services relating to the MRI equipment at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

To actively participate in the initiation, development, planning and direction of appropriate Research and Development activity within the group.

To participate in the teaching and training of NHS staff in basic and advanced MRI physics, techniques, applications and safety.
