Cardiac MRI Service Manager

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicant will provide support to both clinical NHS and researchscanning. This integration between the two services offers an excellentopportunity to broaden your current skill base and develop your specialistskills all whilst contributing to research and innovation. The successfulapplicant will have excellent communication skills, have a patient centredapproach and be ready to learn and expand their knowledge. Whilst experience inCardiac MRI would be beneficial to the post, the successful applicant willreceive the relevant training on Philips and Siemens scanners to ensure theyare highly proficient in all aspects of Cardiac MRI.

Asa department, continual professional development of our staff is our mainpriority with many available in-house training opportunities includingsub-specialisation in paediatric MRI and involvement in research.

This is a part time post of hours per week, theworking schedule will be discussed in the interview.

ClinicalResponsibilities

Toact as Operator, Practitioner and, where necessary, Referrer within theirown scope of practice, by clinically justifying examinations as defined inIR(ME)R 2017 and local protocols.

Tobe able to justify imaging request cards in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017Section 6 Paragraph 5 and, in the absence of a Radiologist advise referringclinicians of the most appropriate investigation.

Tocollaborate with cardiologists and Lead CMRI Radiologists in the planning andevaluation of imaging protocols for patient examinations, in addition developnew protocols and techniques in line with technical advances in area ofspeciality and to ensure all staff within the department are trainedaccordingly.

Tomatch the clinical indications presented by the referrer to a departmentalprotocol with the freedom to modify protocols where appropriate to optimisediagnostic information in view of clinical indications, imaging findings orpatient condition.

Towork as an autonomous practitioner using specialised skills to ensure optimumquality using lowest possible radiation doses where appropriate.

Tohave a high degree of professional/personal autonomy with the ability to makeclinical judgements/decisions using knowledge, skills and experience withfreedom/discretion to act independently.

Torecognise and act upon unexpected critical findings on imaging in the absenceof a radiologist, patients requiring acute admission or referral tospecialist outpatient clinics.

Toprovide, receive and conclude highly sensitive and complex information.

Toparticipate in clinical research projects relevant to the speciality.

Dependanton the area of speciality, the post holder will be able to perform rolespreviously undertaken by radiologists interpret images/data to provideprovisional and /or authorised reports, and / or undertake interventionalprocedures, biopsies / line insertions.

Toensure that infection control procedures and observation of sterile fields areutilised when necessary, paying particular attention to the protection ofclients, staff and equipment during handling of pathological specimens ifrequired.

Toadminister the appropriate drugs, radiopharmaceuticals, contrast agents by thecorrect method within their scope of work as authorised by the Trust.

Tobe aware of any contraindications to the above substances and the appropriateactions to take.

Toassess and evaluate special needs of individual patients and tailor positioningand procedures to their clinical needs, which involve overcoming barriers tounderstanding.

Toanticipate where patient communication difficulties might make completion ofthe pre examination checklist impossible and to implement alternative methodsto ensure patient safety is maintained at all time.

Tocommunicate effectively and empathetically with patients, in particularly besensitive to patients anxieties.

Toprovide a safe environment for patients within their clinical area using safehandling guidelines and risk assessment procedures.

OperationalResponsibilities

Takea leading role in the development and implementation of work policies andprotocols within the specialist area.

Toparticipate in the production of complex staffing rosters and workload.

Planand prioritise workload including liaison with other disciplines.

Tobe responsible for setting and maintaining the standards for the radiographicservice and ensuring junior staff comply with departmental and professionalstandards of practice.

Tosupervise imaging Quality Assurance tests, analyse and evaluate results andliaise with physicists and equipment engineers.

Toencourage and develop all radiography staff by being responsible for monitoringtheir performance and implementing training and development programmes.

Tobe able to use expert knowledge and clinical judgement to determine thealteration of an examination from the departmental protocols withoutconsultation with Cardiologists.

Deliveryof service on a day to day basis, deputising for the Lead CMRI Lead Servicemanager when necessary.

Liaisewith other departments and colleagues to ensure smooth and efficient servicedelivery and patient care.

Toparticipate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within thedepartment and hospital using trust manual handling guidelines and riskassessments.

Collect,collate and analyse workload or other statistics required for departmentalpurposes or for service review.

Todevise, implement and feedback on audit projects and promote evidenced basedpractice in order to develop and maintain a high quality patient focussedservice.

ManagerialResponsibilities

Asdelegated by the Lead CMRI Radiologists, undertake staff performancedevelopment reviews, and participate in the professional development process,including the production of individual personal development plans, that link tothe Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF).

Provideguidance and support to all grades of staff.

Toestablish, monitor and maintain effective working relationships with staff fromother disciplines in order to further the aims of radiology.

Supportthe superintendent in the day to day organisation and supervision of staff andequipment, taking into account workload and skill mix across the department.

Deployresources effectively and efficiently to provide a high quality service to thepatient.

Toidentify, record and prioritise faults on imaging equipment, reporting them tothe appropriate authority, the equipment manufacturer. In addition take into account the effect on the service to the patient and re-arrange the worklists accordingly to ensure minimum inconvenience to the patient.

Tocritically evaluate new equipment and accessories prior to procurement asdelegated by the superintendent radiographer.

Assistin the recruitment and selection of new staff as delegated by thesuperintendent Radiographer.

Toundertake first line complaint handling, dealing with radiographic problems inthe absence of the Superintendent Radiographer.

Tobe aware of targets / co-ordination and escalation policies in use within thedepartment / Trust.

Education,Training, Research and Development.

Tofacilitate the education of other health professionals and possibly the generalpublic, in health promotional activities and the uses of the different forms ofradiological imaging modalities.

Takea lead role in training within the specialist field.

Collaboratewith education providers in the co-ordination and delivery of clinical trainingfor student CMRI radiographers, CMRI graduate radiographers and post graduateradiographers from within and external to the trust.

Thepost holder may be required to organise, lecture or act as external examinerfor undergraduate and / or post graduate courses both at LTH or outside. Universities.

Providewritten assessments of junior staff in accordance with each academicinstitutions requirements.

Keepabreast of current literature and opinion in order to maintain best practice inaccordance with clinical governance principles.
