Key responsibilities:

Our work covers a wide range of projects and there will be opportunities to develop your role to reflect your strengths and interests. Core activities will include:

Developing our Home Energy Model simulation tool, by coding in Python and quality assuring the work of others in the team.Leading and overseeing delivery of multiple major components of the Home Energy Model, such as field assessment methodology or model validation (these are examples � team structure is tbc).Leading a small team of analysts, providing motivation, leadership, and personal development support to ensure they meet their potential.Letting and managing research and development contracts as necessary to support the model. You will take responsibility for delivery through contractor teams.Cultivating a community of stakeholders to design and create an effective policymaking infrastructure, in which the value and influence of data and analysis is maximised.Developing the evidence base through analysis of diverse data sources, to improve our representations of the UK building stock, building physics and associated technologies and policies.Working flexibly as needed to best drive the Net Zero agenda forward in the buildings sector, by providing decision makers with compelling analysis and guidance based on rigorous evidence.

Skills and experiences:

We would love to hear from you if you have:

Experience of successfully delivering a complex model development or improvement project.Excellent quantitative and analytical skills, with interest and experience in modelling and programming.Strong leadership skills and the ability to get the best from your team and lead by example, with significant autonomy.Strong spoken and written communication skills and the ability to adapt your approach to suit the needs of your audience.Collaborative spirit, a love of problem solving and willingness to take initiative when opportunities to make a difference present themselves.An interest in (or curiosity about) energy use in buildings and its key role in fighting climate change and protecting vulnerable citizens.You can either demonstrate the requirements to enter the Government Operational Research Service at the appropriate grade (see below), or are already a member of any Civil Service analytical profession.

Qualifications

Candidates who not already members of a Civil Service analytical profession must demonstrate the following to qualify for GORS badging:

You must possess a 2:1 or higher numerate degree, or a 2:2 with relevant work experience or postgraduate qualification.

Highly numerate degrees include: Astrophysics, Data Science, Decision Science, Econometrics, Engineering, Mathematics, Operational Research, Physics and Statistics.

Other numerate degrees, such as Accounting, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Economics, Finance, Geography, IT, Management, Management Science, Psychology, Sociology, Social Sciences and Systems Science, may be accepted if 50% or more of the modules are considered highly numerate.

Memberships

Membership of Government Operational Research Service, or Government Statistics Group, or Government Economics Service, or Government Social Research Service.

Meet the requirements for Grade 7 level for GORS and the qualification requirements listed. Please see the link for the GORS competency framework.

Alongside your salary of �52,985, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero contributes �14,305 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
