Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses a variety of projects, allowing you to tailor your responsibilities to align with your strengths and interests. Primary duties will include:

  • Enhancing our Home Energy Model simulation tool through Python programming and ensuring the quality of team outputs.
  • Overseeing the delivery of significant components of the Home Energy Model, including methodologies for field assessments and model validation.
  • Leading a small team of analysts, fostering motivation, leadership, and personal development to help them reach their full potential.
  • Managing research and development contracts as needed to support the model, ensuring successful delivery through contractor teams.
  • Building a network of stakeholders to establish an effective policymaking framework that maximizes the value and influence of data and analysis.
  • Enhancing the evidence base through the analysis of various data sources to improve our understanding of the UK building stock, building physics, and related technologies and policies.
  • Adapting flexibly to advance the Net Zero agenda in the building sector by providing decision-makers with insightful analysis and guidance grounded in robust evidence.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A proven track record in successfully managing complex model development or enhancement projects.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities, with experience in modeling and programming.
  • Exceptional leadership qualities, with the ability to inspire and guide your team while working autonomously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor your approach to different audiences.
  • A collaborative mindset, a passion for problem-solving, and a proactive attitude toward seizing opportunities for improvement.
  • A keen interest in energy consumption in buildings and its critical role in combating climate change and supporting vulnerable populations.
  • Eligibility for the Government Operational Research Service at the appropriate level or current membership in any Civil Service analytical profession.

Qualifications

Candidates not currently members of a Civil Service analytical profession must demonstrate the following qualifications for GORS recognition:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 degree in a numerate discipline, or a 2:2 degree with relevant work experience or postgraduate qualification.
  • Acceptable numerate degrees include Astrophysics, Data Science, Decision Science, Econometrics, Engineering, Mathematics, Operational Research, Physics, and Statistics.
  • Other numerate degrees may be considered if at least 50% of the coursework is highly numerate.

Memberships

Membership in the Government Operational Research Service, Government Statistics Group, Government Economics Service, or Government Social Research Service is preferred.

Office Attendance

The Department operates a flexible hybrid working policy, allowing a combination of in-office and remote work. Staff are currently expected to be present in the office or a non-home-based location for 40-60% of their working hours.
