Role Description
The Energy Engineer position is a fixed-term role within the central energy engineering team at DESNZ. This specialized team, consisting of approximately 12 professionals, is committed to integrating sound engineering principles into the department’s policies. The team collaborates closely with various policy units within DESNZ and other governmental bodies, providing expert engineering insights on decarbonization strategies.
As an Energy Engineer, you will contribute to our center of technological excellence, focusing on a diverse range of engineering technologies, including renewable energy generation, nuclear power, electricity distribution, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen and geothermal energy. Your engineering expertise will be pivotal in formulating strategies and policies that enhance the capabilities of the UK energy sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that DESNZ policies are grounded in robust engineering practices and the latest technological advancements.
- Utilize your specialized skills to facilitate the cost-effective decarbonization of the UK’s energy sector, industry, and residential environments.
- Develop public consultations, comprehensive reports, and ministerial submissions aimed at achieving the Net Zero target by 2050, focusing on decarbonization, energy security, and consumer affordability.
- Conduct technical evaluations of applications for energy innovation grant funding and collaborate with other funding agencies.
- Maintain and enhance your expertise in energy engineering within the team and across the Directorate.
Qualifications and Skills
We seek a highly skilled individual with a strong background in energy engineering:
- A PhD in a relevant engineering discipline or currently pursuing a PhD, with a keen interest in energy engineering.
- Experience in addressing the UK’s decarbonization objectives, with a willingness to explore various engineering fields.
- A proactive approach to learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies.
- Experience in managing R&D projects and the ability to visit industry sites for collaborative research.
- Exceptional writing skills for preparing technical reports and submissions.
