Job summary

The Deputy Director Finance for Military Operations leads a team of up to 30 people and is the senior leader in Strategic Command responsible for providing financial advice, business intelligence, support, and assurance for all aspects of military operational spend against budgets. The role is accountable to Strategic Command Director Finance and will deputise for the Director whenever required, including on wider financial issues in the Command. The post-holder will also be a member of the Strategic Command Finance Senior Leadership Team. The role will also report into Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) and other operational units within the Command and the post-holder will also be part of the PJHQ management team.

Job description

The current responsibilities of the role include:

Providing a fully embedded service and being trusted adviser to the Chief of Joint Operations and other operational commanders to deliver finance advice and authorities at pace within UK headquarters and through deployed teams overseas.Managing large and complex budget portfolios, understanding key issues, risks and opportunities and anticipating external factors, such as the economic and political landscape, which may have a significant impact.Providing high quality, timely, accurate and clearly communicated financial analysis, and wider performance analysis, to the senior stakeholders across Strategic Command, the wider Ministry of Defence finance and operational policy teams and His Majesty's Treasury. Developing and maintaining strong, collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships, understanding and respecting other perspectives. Working collaboratively across finance, the business and other functions, identifying and bridging gaps, by acting as a point of escalation, to mitigate risks and resolve issues.Creating an environment within finance and the wider business area, that values performance, setting challenging team targets and ensuring effective measures are in place, which align to objectives.Driving the continuous improvement of financial processes, striving for greater innovation and better value for money, including opportunities to build greater resilience and efficiency within the finance workforce. Championing the use and value of data and analytics, embedding this as part of senior level reporting.Identifying and implementing changes that transform and continuously improve the flexibility, responsiveness and the quality of service that finance provides, by engaging with the business and prioritising those changes that add most value.Leadership of a team of up to 30, setting the direction, being clear on the priorities and ensuring team members understand their part in delivering military operations and finance objectives. Understanding the capacity, capabilities and ambitions of your team, effectively empowering, inspiring, motivating and coaching them, supporting individuals� personal development and careers, to create a great place to work.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their experience and skills against the following essential criteria

Excellent leadership credentials with a proven track record of building, motivating, empowering and continuously improving a high performing diverse team, often under pressure.Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to respond to urgent, unexpected issues. Ability to rapidly grip and understand emerging issues, making robust and effective decisions at pace drawing conclusions on a wide range of complex and sometimes incomplete evidence.Managing large and complex budget portfolios, understanding key issues, risks and opportunities and anticipating external factors, such as the economic and political landscape, which may have a significant impact.The ability to work flexibly with a high degree of autonomy and resilience, responding quickly to complex and high-profile demands.Outstanding relationship management and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in partnership with a wide range of senior stakeholders across MOD, the Armed Forces and Whitehall, building effective relationships. Chartered accountant status with CIMA, CCAB or equivalent professional body.
