Job summary

We are looking for an exceptional candidate to join the Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) team in the International Strategy and Trade Relations (ISTR) directorate. ISTR is responsible for strengthening the UK�s trade relationship with partners around the world by protecting and increasing access to markets.

Our mission is to drive economic growth, by capitalising on opportunities to open up and protect overseas markets for UK businesses now and into the future. We lead on relevant bilateral trade and policy dialogues internationally, we manage and lead market access across DBT and Whitehall as well as managing the implementation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving forward the UK�s trade policy objectives across Mexico and the Caribbean and support efforts to address barriers UK businesses face when seeking to invest or expand across these markets.

Key activities and deliverables of the role include:��

Working with DBT and FCDO colleagues overseas across the Mexico and Caribbean region to understand these markets, UK business interests and local Government interests. Leading engagement with these stakeholders and others across HMG to identify barriers to trade in the region and develop action plans to resolve these. Overseeing trade policy aspects of the UK�s bilateral relationships in Mexico and the Caribbean, for example, collaboration with colleagues across HMG on the UK-CARIFORUM Economic Partnership Agreement and supporting our bilateral trade relationship with Mexico, including leveraging UK accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).Preparing briefing, submissions and Parliamentary Questions (PQs) for Ministers and senior officials.Inputting bilateral trade policy priorities into multilateral fora and vice-versa.Maintaining strong internal networks including managing a successful xDBT LATAC forum. Cross-Government engagement with other Departments/agencies FCDO, UK Export Finance and DEFRA to deliver trade priorities for our markets. There will also be opportunities to support strategic external stakeholder engagement with relevant organisations.

Essential criteria:

The ability to work collaboratively in and across teams, building and maintaining long-lasting working relationships.Confident and clear written and oral communication skills, and the ability to persuade and influence others.�Strategic thinking and a problem-solving outlook.The ability to balance competing priorities.

Candidates applying must have or be willing to undergo security clearance at SC level.�

Desirable criteria:

Experience working on trade policy and an understanding of the UK�s trade and investment offer.Experience of working internationally, including some interest or experience of working with the Latin America and Caribbean region.
