The candidate will be part of a global hardware team and be responsible for delivering designs into cutting edge protection and control hardware platforms. These will include:
Low power analogue/mixed signal designs for data acquisition, sensors, status monitoring and control.
High efficiency, compact PSU designs of up to 65W.
High performance, low power multi-core processing platforms running real time operating systems.
FPGA / SOC based solutions for DSP filtering, communications controllers and highspeed processing interfaces.
Redundant Ethernet topologies and serial communications interfaces

The ideal candidate will deliver innovative and practical solutions that satisfy diverse requirements including a wide input voltage range and high reliability.

The job will entail the design, capture and development of high efficiency wide input power supplies through to low power digital sampling circuits

The successful engineer will have a proven track record in analogue design, digital and mixed signal design and will have several of the following technical skills :

  • Experience in the hardware development for Transmission / Distribution protection products, existing experience in hardware development for the MiCOM or C264 platform is preferred.
  • Low power analogue and mixed signal
  • Power supply topologies
  • Electro-magnetics and transformers
  • Resolving EMC issues at product and system levels.
  • Reliability improvement techniques (FMEA, PSA etc)
  • H/W Architecture - Able to define several hardware architectural options and trade off against defined criteria to identify optimal hardware solution.
  • Bus technologies / Communications - Good knowledge of main communications technologies.
  • EMC Design and Legislation knowledge - Good understanding of theory of EMC.
  • Design for Manufacture/Assembly. Manufacturing Processes - Good knowledge of the manufacturing processes and design technique.
  • Design for Test. Test processes - Good knowledge of the test processes and design techniques.
  • Microprocessor / DSP Architectures - Good knowledge of architectural trends of current microprocessor and DSPs.
  • Simulation / Modelling - Good knowledge of main modelling and simulation tool solutions.
  • FPGA / CPLD development - Good knowledge of major device architectures with a good understanding of the VHDL language.
  • ECAD schematic entry & PCB layout - Good knowledge of ECAD tools for schematic entry and PCB layout.
  • Product Safety - Understand main aspects of products safety.
  • Experience in the hardware development for Transmission / Distribution protection products.
  • Experience in design and development of products for safety critical applications, to IEC61508 standard, SIL3 or above would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of WEEE and RoHS legislation.
