Job Summary

GE Aviation is seeking a highly skilled Power Electronics Engineer to join our team at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford. As a key member of our Valve Converter Engineering & Technology Function, you will play a critical role in delivering development projects and customer projects for the HVDC Valve Converter.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Project Documentation

Generate comprehensive project documentation, including type test specifications, type test reports, and design reports.

Component Validation

Validate key component ratings, including size of the Valve Converter, calculation of losses, and RAM study.

Customer Specification

Work against customer specifications at the project stage, including clause-by-clause review and risk analysis.

Integration with Other Departments

Integrate with other engineering departments for product definition, including system design, main scheme, layout, and commercial aspects.

Circuit Simulation

Perform circuit simulation for valve design and future testing as part of project-awarded work.

Product Design and Validation

Design and validate high-voltage power electronic products, including IGBT and thyristor, and passive components used in valve converters.

Design Experience

Design and apply experience on IGBT and thyristor driver circuits, as well as protection and control circuits for IGBT and thyristor.

Testing and Commissioning

Perform routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing, requiring technical skills and analytical thinking to perform fault analysis and design improvement.

Product Support

Provide product support during the complete life cycle, from development to tender and commissioning of projects.

Site Activities

Support site activities during installation of the valve converter, pre-commissioning, and training for customers.

Travel Requirements

Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.

Requirements

  1. Education

Educated to degree level in electrical or electronic engineering.

Experience

Proven experience of the design and/or development of power electronic converters, preferably at high power (>1MVA).

Skills

Good understanding of power semiconductors, their control, protection, and application.

Personal Qualities

Ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team, enquiring mind, and desire to learn new skills, ability to apply different engineering disciplines, and willingness to share knowledge.

Prior experience of electrical transmission industry.

Site Experience

Prior experience on site.

Thermal and Hydraulic Design

Thermal and hydraulic design experience, including loss temperature calculations, thermal modeling, thermal characteristics of materials, and pressure drop calculations.

Intellectual Property

Experience with intellectual property and the patent process.

Power Electronic Control and Protection

Understanding of power electronic control and protection.

Multi-Modular Converters

Understanding of multi-modular converters.

High Voltage Engineering

High voltage engineering experience.

Leadership

Ability to coordinate and lead a small group of engineers.

Knowledge Sharing

Good at sharing knowledge and experience.
