This is a full-time, Specialty Doctor with The Specialist Eating Disorder Service (0-25 years)

The base for the Service and this post is Oaklands Centre, Raddlebarn Road, Birmingham, B29 6JB but City-Wide working may be required . There is adequate accommodation for the permanent professional staff on the team, for the secretarial staff and for any future trainees. Secretarial support will be made available. The doctor will have his/her own computer which will be connected to the Trust intranet and also provided with other IT equipment as necessary.

The successful applicant will join an established SEDs multidisciplinary team, comprising of specialist and dedicated mental health professionals including consultant psychiatrists, senior mental health practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, speech and language therapists, family therapists, occupational therapist and psychology colleagues. The Specialty doctor will work under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist.

Main duties of the job

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) is seeking to recruit a Specialty Doctor for Specialist Eating Disorder Service (SEDS), who is committed to working with young people aged 0-25 with eating disorders as well as contribute to providing psychiatric & medical risk management in the community.

This post will have a central role within an MDT context in delivering psychiatric assessment and treatment for a caseload of patients and their families, as well as contribute to providing psychiatric, physical health & medical risk management.

From an overall professional perspective, they will support the Medical Lead, Medical Director for FTB and MH services and Chief Medical Officer of Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC). In turn all are ultimately responsible within the Trust to the Chief Executive Officer.

Job responsibilities


• Providing direct psychiatric services through the clinical assessment, diagnosis and care plan, risk assessment and management plans, treatment formulation, prescribing and work with the team on implementing evidence-based interventions.


• The post holder will be required to hold a caseload of patients (0-25 year olds) and review patients at a frequency according to their clinical need and risks.


• To work alongside Consultants and the multi-disciplinary team in the provision of services for this area and, in particular, to provide assessment and evaluation of cases where a eating/psychiatric disorder is suspected.


• The post holder will participate in formulating and implementing appropriate care plan around physical healthcare needs and monitoring for patients in SEDS.


• To consult with senior medical colleagues where further help with complex assessments is needed.


• To take clinical responsibility for any patient seen by him/ her, and for the advice he/she gives to members of the multi-disciplinary team.


• To provide mental health assessments on both new referrals and open cases, and continuing treatment in drug or psychological therapies.


• To support the SEDS MDT in interpretation of physical health checks, such as bloods and ECG, monitoring plans and risk management. This will also involve close liaison at times with acute medical colleagues in general hospitals regarding patients who require acute admission for physical stabilization and treatment.


• To write letters and communications to GPs and other professionals as required.


• To liaise with provider collaborative teams regarding patients at risk of hospital admission as required.


• To participate in various medical staff meetings within Forward Thinking Birmingham and BWC Mental Health Services as required.


• To perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances in consultation with senior and junior colleagues.


• To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, have flexibility to respond to changing service requirements.


• To participate in regular Audit and Quality Assurance programs to improve and maintain the high standard of service.


• To participate in all aspects of the Clinical Governance structure developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualificaton


• Current full registration with the GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment)


• GMC Licence to practise


• Eligible to work in the UK


• Minimum 3 years post MBBS experience


• Minimum 2 years Psychiatry experience


• Evidence of being a strong team member with excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills


• Able to manage duties under the MHA, including assessment of patients in Place of Safety detained under Section 136


• Experience with the treatment of patients with complex mental disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, emotional trauma and emerging personality disorders


• Management of patients under CPA


• Knowledge & experience of clinical audit


• Ability to supervise and train junior medical staff


• Ability to work within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework


• Ability to work across teams and disciplinary boundaries in a collaborative style


• Excellent communication skills, diplomacy and tact


• Ability to keep good, legible written records
