Specialist Speech and Language Therapist: Autism

London, Greater London, United Kingdom London Borough of Merton Full time

Due to an upcoming maternity leave for one of our permanent team members we will have a Band 6 level vacancy in our Autism ARPS (Addition Resource Provision) co-located in a number of Merton mainstream primary schools. This role offers opportunities to develop or extend your skills and neurodiversity affirming practice with autistic pupils. There will also be opportunities to develop your supervision skills by supporting less experienced colleagues, deliver training and contribute to service development.

Team Role:

Our small and friendly team works as part of the Local Authority in mainstream and special schools as well as in the Youth Offending Team and Virtual School for Children In Care Service in Merton (South West London). We deliver the statutory support children require and are developing our targeted and universal support to school across the Borough. We have excellent links with the Education and SEN teams and we enjoy multi-disciplinary working with other professionals such as specialist teachers, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists etc.

Team CPD:

The service is professionally led by Speech Therapist Team Leaders and we have Clinical Leads in Autism, SEMH, SLD/PMLD/Complex Needs and DLD who will be able to provide relevant clinical support to any successful candidate. We also offer regular individual and peer group supervision to all therapists in order to develop their clinical skills and support their well-being. Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN) is actively encouraged. We have strong links with City and UCL Universities and offer clinical placements to BSC and MSC speech and language students. We are committed to evidence-based practice and provide internal and/or fund external training in all relevant interventions and approaches.

Working arrangements:

The main team base is at the Chaucer Centre in Morden, but the IT we provide allows therapists to work flexibly at schools or at home (where appropriate) in order to complete administrative tasks. Good transport links in the borough (Northern and District line tube, rail, bus and tram services) allow therapists to travel relatively easily to work and between schools.

Mileage or public transport costs between schools is covered, as are any training (in line with CPD) and professional fees incurred (HCPC and RCSLT). Foreign Applicants from overseas can apply to be sponsored by the Local Authority.

If you are interested:

If you enjoy working in schools, are keen to contribute to the delivery of the service from Reception to Y6, are flexible, collaborative and have knowledge of neurodiversity affirming practice when working with autistic pupils we would be delighted to hear from you.

If you would like to discuss this role in more detail before applying please contact Julie Rider ) or Charlotte Bennett )
