MSc by Research: CFD Modelling of Hydrogen-Fuelled Internal Combustion Engines

Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Oxford Brookes University Full time

Eligibility: Open to UK applicants only

Stipend: Not available

Start date: September 2024

Project description

The School of ECM at Oxford Brookes University is pleased to offer a 12-month full-time MSc by Research commencing September 2024. The successful candidate will work within the Propulsion & Pollution Modelling (PPM) Research Group, under the supervision of Dr Fabrizio Bonatesta and Mr Edward Hopkins.

Through strategic collaborations with the automotive industry and software developers, the PPM Research Group has developed expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of internal combustion engines using both traditional as well as zero-carbon fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. A recent project led by Ford Motor Company (the H2 ICE Innovate UK Smart Grant) culminated with the establishment of an initial CFD protocol for the modelling of hydrogen engines using complex jet-ignition combustion technology. For the benefit of the modern automotive industry and of the wider engine modelling community, this protocol needs further refinement and generalisation.

The offered 12-month MSc by Research project will complement this research work, investigating fundamental aspects of the hydrogen engine modelling framework, including injection, air-fuel mixing and combustion, targeting both gasoline-style tumbling as well as diesel-style swirling combustion chambers. The modelling work will be supported by actual engine test data from previous and parallel research projects. Specific in-house training will be provided, but the candidate is expected to have reasonable experience of in-cylinder CFD modelling.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic, competent candidate, with a passion for engine technology and committed to the cause of decarbonisation of the transport sector. They should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter, research capabilities and a commitment to complete the work and submit their MSc by Research thesis within 1 year.

The selection criteria include:

  • A good first degree in Mechanical, Automotive or Motorsport Engineering.
  • Experience in engine modelling using CFD software, preferably Siemens Star-CCM+.
  • Experience of processing large amounts of technical data.
  • Knowledge and understanding of modern IC engine technology.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Good written and oral communication and organisational skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible to:

  • Undertake independent research in hydrogen engine modelling, including selection, testing and improvement of models and modelling methodologies.
  • Process and analyse experimental data for model development, validation and calibration.
  • Present research findings to groups of people.
  • Conduct literature reviews and, where appropriate, draft papers for publication.
