Job Purpose

To provide flexible, confidential support to children and young people where there is:-

  • a learning or physical disability, or
  • a dysfunction within the family situation.

Principal Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the family, to assist in promoting a valued role for the young person in areas of choice, presence in the community, social networks, reputation and image, and in developing skills and enhancing experience utilising available community resources.
  • To develop and maintain good relationships with families and/or carers.
  • To work as part of a team, attending group/individual supervision, staff meetings and training sessions as and when required in consultation with the Team Manager and Centre co-ordinator.
  • To promote a signs of safety approach as required
  • To facilitate Supervised Contact.
  • To provide support for children with disabilities.
  • To provide support for Looked After Children.
  • To support Foster Placements at risk of breaking down.
  • Direct work with families at home.
  • Occupying a child while a parent/carer is required to undertake another role which has been identified by the social worker as necessary.
  • Early morning work with a family enabling the child to get to school on time and establishing effective routines.
  • Supporting foreign national children with little or no communication and /or language skills.
  • To contribute to the monitoring of the service by written and verbal reports.
  • To be aware of and adhere to the Council's policies in respect of, for example, Health and Safety at Work and Equal Opportunities.

Person Specification

  • A good standard of education (preferably with a child care qualification eg NNEB or BTEC or NVQ 2/3 in child and social care).
  • Ideally, experience of paid or voluntary work with children and young people, and their families.
  • A broad understanding/knowledge of issues around disabilities including Pembrokeshire County Council policy and statutory requirements.
  • The ability to communicate well verbally and to write clear and concise reports.
  • Initiative, self-motivation, capacity to cope with stress.
  • A positive approach to attitudes, values, empathy and practicality.
  • Commitment to equal opportunities principles.
  • A valid driving licence, and access to transport for work use, the role may involve out of county travel on occasions
  • Welsh language skills are desirable.
