The Vacancy

Position Summary

We are seeking to hire a Head of Strategic Portfolio Management to be based out of our London office.

This is a newly created role, reporting to the CEO, but will take operational and technical direction from the SVP Actuary & Portfolio Management leader in the (U.S), ensuring alignment of local and corporate objectives and deliverables.

The role will be critical for driving and reporting on the CNAH underwriting portfolio and performance. A key business enabler, this role will bring technical SME knowledge, underwriting acumen and operational excellence to drive outstanding business performance.

In partnership with business leaders, accountable for the enablement of underwriting to achieve CNAH strategic business plans (all lines and geography) through collaborative and strategic partnership with BU heads and the Lloyds Active Underwriter,

The role is multi-faceted and incorporates:

This is a key role that drives business growth and profitability through high levels of collaboration and influence.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting Strategy
  • Will partner with business leaders in setting strategic business plans ensuring the CNAH aggregate portfolio is optimized and delivers our stated aims of being an upper quartile insurer underpinned by our underwriting specialisms and effective and efficient underwriting governance and reporting.
  • Ensures the achievement of our underwriting strategies through effective monitoring and reporting through all stages of the strategic planning and implementation life-cycle, including providing feedback to ensure we are nimble in reaching our growth profitability objectives.
  • Develops framework and cadence for reviews of UW strategies to ensure the achievement of our aggregate profitability and/or growth objectives. Includes setting standards for frequency and scope of reviews and incorporation of results into business actions.
  • Will liaise with relevant CNAH and Global underwriting leaders to ensure total alignment to corporate objectives, appetite and governance.
  • Will assist underwriting in setting strategic business plans ensuring the CNAH aggregate portfolio is optimized and delivers our stated aims of being an upper quartile insurer underpinned by our underwriting specialisms and effective and efficient underwriting governance and reporting.
Reporting
  • Will provide SME technical data, information and advice to underwriting working closely with Actuarial, Claims, ,Finance, Data Analytics and other departments.
  • Will partner and work closely with CNAH's financial planning team to achieve best business outcomes.
  • Will provide proactive clear and accurate reporting to the CEO across all areas of the business as required ensuring data is presented in a comprehensive and holistic view to enable business decisions,
  • Monitors and reports on profitability and growth of product lines and segments to ensure present and future strategies achieve all of their objectives and identifies business opportunities.
Operational Management
  • Will assist the CEO in the effective running of the Underwriting Committee ensuring critical and key topics are discussed at the forum with clearly documented outcomes.
  • Partners with senior leaders to monitor, analyze, and manage the strategic and operational plans that have a substantial impact on achieving growth and profitability goals for the enterprise.
  • Will play a critical role in ensuring key initiatives and investments are delivered across underwriting with KPI measures ensuring return on investment both short and long term and will report progress to CEO as required.
  • Will play a key role in improving underwriting forecasting and accruals process, ensuring data in accurate and process is efficient.
  • Ensures the achievement of our underwriting strategies through monitoring from implementation through the strategy life-cycle, including providing feedback to ensure we are nimble in reaching our profitability objectives.
  • Leads corporate efforts to identify, quantify, monitor and mitigate risks involved in optimizing the achievement of our underwriting strategies.
  • Develops framework and cadence for reviews of UW strategies to ensure the achievement of our aggregate profitability and/or growth objectives. Includes setting standards for frequency and scope of reviews and incorporation of results into business actions.
People Management
  • Lead, direct and provide value-added guidance to underwriting function.
  • Build and maintain an effective, motivated and committed team, ensuring succession.
  • Working within the overall headcount budget, plan resourcing. requirement, ensuring sufficient resources to meet plan.
  • Partner with HR to develop and implement performance management metrics.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Relevant professional qualification eg - Actuarial, Financial Planning or Accountancy).
  • Typically a minimum of 15 years related work experience with c.10 years of senior management and insurance industry experience.
  • Must have experience working in a complex matrix organisation, preferably with a U.S. parent company and pan European operational experience.

  • Personal resilience and gravitas - will need to be comfortable representing the CEO in multiple forums
  • Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
  • Technical SME, advanced proficiency in all software and reporting applications and methodology
