Research Fellowship in Anthropocene Biodiversity and in Societal Change

York, York City, United Kingdom University of York Full time

Research Centre

An Arts and Humanities research fellowship is available with the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity (LCAB) at the University of York. LCAB is funded by the Leverhulme Trust to increase knowledge of how the relationship between humanity and the natural world is changing. The Centre recognises biological gains as well as losses, and identifies the circumstances under which changes are perceived as positive or negative. It aims to understand and inform society's response to these changes.

LCAB represents a dynamic interdisciplinary environment where you will be able to collaborate with academics, researchers and postgraduates from a host of intellectual perspectives and disciplines. You will be a member of LCAB, plus an appropriate University Department.

Role

We seek an outstanding Arts and Humanities researcher to conduct innovative, collaborative and individual research in any area relevant to the Centre's strategic research goals and remit.

As well as working on your own research and outputs, you will provide guidance to other staff and students, and participate in the delivery of wider research projects. You will also be mentored to develop proposals for further funding (particularly independently-funded research fellowships).

The fellowship is available full-time for 3 years (Grade 7 - £44,263 to £54,395 a year), based in York. We are particularly interested in existing Fellows who have secured funding from other schemes and wish to continue their work through an LCAB Fellowship.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

We are looking for researchers with a PhD and previous postdoctoral experience in the Arts and Humanities, and proven ability to work collaboratively, ideally with an interdisciplinary perspective. You will have an outstanding publication record, as well as:

  • Research expertise in an area of Anthropocene Biodiversity that will enhance LCAB's research strategy and goals, with knowledge of a range of research approaches appropriate to the field of study
  • Well developed research skills, appropriate to the subdiscipline
  • Ability to write up research work as high profile publications
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience
  • Evidence of active participation in the planning, advancement and management of research projects, and ability to lead and/or take responsibility for research projects and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research; and to identify sources of funding and lead on the process of securing funds, with collaborators if required
  • Competency to make presentations at internationally recognised conferences or exhibit work at other appropriate events
  • Interest and enthusiasm for the research, collaborative ethos and capacity to work proactively with colleagues

Applicants should provide a brief outline of their proposed research (2 page maximum; font size 11 Arial) identifying, for example, key questions and approaches, justifying the goals and how they align with LCABs research remit. Following appointment, this will act as a starting point for discussions with mentors before collaboratively agreeing the focus of the work.

Interview date: July 2024

For informal enquiries: please contact LCAB Enquiries (lcab-)
