Senior Ops and Regulatory Lawyer

Our client is seeking a Senior Ops and Regulatory Lawyer to join their team, preferably with experience in the Water Industry. The successful candidate will work within the Legal Department, focusing on Energy & Natural Resources.

Role Summary

  • Acting as subject matter expert for regulatory matters pertaining to water and waste, water fittings, water resources, street works, charges schemes, and drought.
  • Liaising with subject matter experts in the MLS team or elsewhere within ES on environmental permitting, planning, property, competition law, construction, procurement, and commercial.
  • Managing your caseload and reporting to the client and the Head of Legal Service Delivery on case progress handled by the O&R team.
  • Supporting other O&R team members with their caseload when needed.
  • Managing the lawyers within the O&R team, providing guidance on case conduct, setting objectives, monitoring performance, conducting reviews, and overseeing team development.
  • Contributing to the management of the wider MLS team, MLS operations, and deliverables under the MLS contract.
  • Responsible for allocating new O&R matters submitted through the client instruction portal.
  • Keeping abreast of legal, legislative, regulatory, and industry developments relevant to the legal specialism, and delivering regulatory law training.

Profile Requirements

A successful Senior Regulatory Lawyer should have:

  • UK Qualified solicitor with at least 10 years of post-qualification experience in a regulated sector, preferably within the water and sewage sector.
  • Experience working in an in-house environment and with all levels of seniority within a business.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of legislation, licences, codes of practice, consumer law, and competition law.
  • Ability to work independently, manage a team, handle tasks effectively, and make sound judgments.
  • Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team-oriented mindset, and a good relationship builder.
