About us

The BioIndustry Association (BIA) is the voice of the innovative life sciences and biotech industry, enabling and connecting the UK ecosystem so that businesses can start, grow and deliver world-changing innovation. Established in 1989, BIA is the award-winning trade association with over 600 members including start-ups, biotechnology and innovative life science companies, pharmaceutical and technological companies, Universities, research centres, tech transfer offices, incubators and accelerators, and a wide range of life science service providers: investors, lawyers, IP consultants, and IR agencies.

With a team of 30 friendly and hardworking staff in central London, we are the key thought leader for the sector – working across a wide range of related issues including: policy, finance, science, regulatory, legal and talent on topics including: engineering biology, Deep Biotech, mRNA, genomics and techbio.

About the role

The Associate Director of Membership and Business Development is responsible for managing all activities directly relating to the recruitment and retention of member organisations. You will have direct responsibility for the renewal and growth of membership income, development of member lifetime value (LTV) and related revenue streams in line with agreed annual budgets.

The key role oversees the smooth running and growth of membership services directly relating to member benefit through our Business Solutions scheme, but also in developing opportunities for member organisations overseas, through member supporter/sponsorship of BIA events, specific projects and working with BIA colleagues to ensure engagement of existing and new members in policy, influence and community activities.

About you

We seek a candidate with strong commercial awareness and business acumen, proven in business development or membership engagement, and a record of meeting revenue or retention targets. You should be a self-starter, capable of working independently and leading diverse teams.

This role requires a natural networker who can grasp and convey membership offerings, intuitively understanding potential members' business needs to create convincing solutions. Experience in delivering sales or retention plans, closing sales, and CRM principles is essential. You must demonstrate high professionalism and confidently liaise with C-level decision makers, approaching sales and upsell opportunities with energy and determination.

Strategic thinking, attention to detail, and hands-on capability are important, as are strong interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills. Whilst a life sciences background is not required, you must quickly understand complex subjects.
