Autism Specialist Advisor – Community Services (Adults)

Autism West Midlands are the leading charity in the West Midlands for people on the autism spectrum. We use our expertise to enrich the lives of autistic people and those who love and care for them. Our passionate, expert staff and volunteers work across all age groups and abilities, providing direct support.

Our Community Services team enables autistic adults, children, and their families to access support within their local community to build resilience, confidence and skills to actively participate in society.

We are continuing to develop our services for autistic adults and families of children in Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country, with new programmes on offer which are delivered online or in community venues in Birmingham, Solihull and Black Country.

The following generic job description covers both our adults and children and family services. This job role will focus on support to autistic adults. However, there will be opportunities to contribute to other all age projects delivered by our Community Services team working across Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country, delivering elements of the job description below depending on the skills and experience of the post holder.

The post holder will need flexibility to work as part of a small team including working outside their normal working hours when required, including evening and weekend work. A full driving license and access to a car is essential for this role.

Location: Birmingham and Black Country community delivery. Office base available at Head Office, Imperial Court, Kings Norton Business Centre, Sovereign Road, BS30 3ES. Location will be changing this year to a new office in Selly Oak part of Birmingham.

Becoming a Support Worker with Autism West Midlands means you are someone who will:

Your main focus will be to understand the person you support by identifying his/her likes/dislikes hobbies and interests. It's important that you listen, understand and respect each person you are providing support for.

"My senses might affect me in ways you don't experience, please try to understand."

You must be able to adopt a flexible approach and identify what the individual wants and how you can support to achieve it. We want our support workers to be creative and proactive in discovering how goals can be worked towards and achieved together.

"My routine is important to me but sometimes I like a change and want something different. Support my choices and understand that I have the right to change my mind."

The people we support are vulnerable adults and therefore a part of your role is ensuring that we hold accurate and reliable records and safeguard the individuals against any perceived or actual harm

"I may not always be able to say how I feel so pay attention to me and see the changes in my behaviour, that's how you'll know if somethings not right. Do the right thing by me"
