Managing Director, Ben Williams's August Industry Update

As I share my update this month, it would be impossible to ignore the fact that construction industry market confidences are currently feeling the pressure. Faced with a series of economic, environmental and social challenges, our sector appears to be taking a 'wait and see' approach to the progression of many major UK construction projects.Whilst activity momentum may have slowed for the present, we must continue to prepare for what lies ahead by navigating and addressing sector issues through education, training, technology and by attracting new talent to the field wherever possible, as is the EPC way.
As green shoots start to break ground in terms of more sustainable industry practice, we should support and encourage their growth by working as a business community that's committed to realising change.
Sharing at EFEEWith conference season upon us it's the ideal time to share our mutual learning and capabilities to help address those issues. At the 12th EFEE World Conference on Explosives and Blasting in Dublin this September we'll be joining our Irish sister company and lead event sponsor, Kemek, together with co-sponsor, EPC Groupe, in showcasing our technologies, collaborative expertise and progressive developments.
This is a valuable conference for EPC-UK and we are proud to be a part of it. Our own Dr Rob Farnfield will be taking to the stage to present his latest paper, written in conjunction with Dr Geoff Adderley, titled: "Shock & Transient Pressure Damage to Electronic Detonators – A Practical Test". Our exhibition team will also be on board, developing their own CPD opportunities and detailing the digitalized quarrying and leaner technologies we've become renowned for effectively bringing to the field.
I'm also pleased to announce that the Institute of Quarrying will be attending EFEE for the first time this year. As Chairperson of the IQ, I am proud to support the Institute as they take part in the exhibition and use it as a platform to attract more members. The IQ team will also be launching its new "Use of Explosives in Quarrying" book and raising awareness of the educational, Blasting Diploma that will soon be available to help those progressing within our field to further their learning and professional development.
In this month's OnsiteAs we share our own knowledge, we hope to learn from others. In the August edition of Onsite, we report on the evolution of our company's own training programmes, which are being further advanced to help employees upskill and develop mindsets that will benefit our environment and working culture.
Transition is affecting all areas of the EPC-UK business, and our article on site sustainability at Bramble Island with Robert Chapman further highlights the operational changes and new attitudes we're realising to secure our commercial and environmental sustainability.
As ever, we need the support and abilities of employees with the passion to enable us to progress and, with more opportunities to join our team through both academic and vocational routes, Onsite talks to three talented Shotfirers, each of whom are thriving in the field and experiencing job satisfaction and reward with EPC-UK's training and encouragement.
I reiterate a view held by many members of our team, that it is an exciting time to be involved in the drilling & blasting and commercial explosives field; and whilst we are correct to feel concern about market confidences in the present, the future requires us to develop the right people, together with the technologies that will serve to support them. This will improve operations for both planet and profit, providing the key to our industry's onward success.
