An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive and enthusiastic individual to join the General Surgery Department as we transform our Cancer services in line with the National Faster Diagnosis Programme objectives.

The effective management of Cancer pathways is vital to ensuring trust compliance against national waiting times targets. Next Steps is a successful UHL initiative to improve pathway management; it is a way of working to ensure that patients on a Cancer pathway know what their next step is, have a consistent point of contact throughout their pathway and are communicated with every step of the way


The Next Steps Co-ordinator role will ensure that all patients on a Cancer pathway will have the next steps on their clinical pathway booked ensuring that the Cancer quality standards are met and patient experience is optimised.

The role will involve communicating with patients, relatives or carers in a discreet and caring manner.

Improving Cancer performance within the CMG is a pivotal part of the role, working alongside a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality care.

To be expert in the use of the Patient Administration System - HISS/Patient Centre, e-Referral Service (Choose and Book) and to access other relevant systems to ensure patients next step


To continually review admin/next steps processes in relation to the cancer pathway and ensure that any issues causing a delay in the pathway are escalated to the Service Manager.

To attend the relevant cancer patient meetings and provide updates on patient pathways to a multi-disciplinary team.

Support the Service Manager in implementing admin process change in response to changes in national cancer targets. Generate ideas on ways to improve capacity utilisation, resource use and administrative processes.

To be present in relevant clinics to provide information, complete checklists and book 'next steps' with the patient.

Following MDT to book the next steps. This includes phoning the patient and booking outpatient appointments and diagnostic tests.

Support the Service Manager to monitor the Long Term follow up database and ensure patients are transferred or discharged as per local guidelines

To carry out audits of whether patients have left with next steps and providing a report for feedback to the CMG board.

Auditing patient experience data through the use of patient surveys.

When requested, attending any meetings about Next Steps


Contact patients by telephone and face to face in clinic to ensure checklists required for booking investigations such as PET scans and CT guided biopsies.

Continually review processes in relation to the cancer pathway and ensure any delays are escalated to the Service Manager.

To work primarily independently and on own initiative with mínimal supervision to carry out the duties of the post.


Attend weekly cancer PTL meetings, take responsibility following the meetings for ensuring that any outcomes identified are actioned in a timely manner, liaising with staff in various departments as necessary.

To be responsible for ensuring that the patient does not experience unnecessary delay on the cancer pathway.

Monitor the patient's current status and communicate as required with the appropriate consultant to ensure that diagnostic/staging tests and treatment are arranged in a timely manner, and to chase results as required.


Work collaboratively with medical secretaries, clinic coordinators, nurse specialists and other staff within the Trust to ensure appropriate management of patient information and coordination of patient pathway.

Take responsibility for the prioritisation of workload. Develop systems
