Wandsworth, Greater London, United Kingdom Hestia Full time

Job Title:
Tutor and Activities Coordinator

Reporting to:
Service Manager

Contract:
Permanent, Full-time

Interview Date: 27th April 2023

About the Service/Department

Based in our Age Activity Centre since April 1st 2017, the Café provides a safe space for people who feel they are moving towards or are experiencing a mental health crisis.

People, aged 18+, from South West London (Kingston, Merton, Sutton, Richmond and Wandsworth) can self-present at the Café.

The Café helps people discuss the nature of the crisis they are experiencing, their strengths and the coping skills they could use to decrease their distress and promote their wellbeing.

The Age Activity Centre (AAC) provides an engaging and welcoming environment for people aged 60+ who live in Wandsworth to socialise and learn new skills.

From computer classes to Dance and Yoga, the AAC offers a schedule of activities which has been designed by its members to ensure they have the opportunity to enjoy later life.

The centre provides a lunch club, and trips and outings, in addition to a wide range of activities and adult learning classes.

The Centre is open 4 days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 10am to 4pm).

About the role

The Tutor and Activities Coordinator post is an excellent opportunity to be part of an experienced and dynamic team, working in partnership with a range of agencies (including our partnership work with the NHS).

It is an opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives, supporting excellent quality support and interventions to customers experiencing or likely to experience a mental health crisis as an alternative to using statutory crisis services; and an opportunity to coordinate the diverse repertoire of activities and adult learning opportunities at the AAC.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Work with the Team Leader (TL) of the AAC and Team Manager (TM) of the Recovery café to set up and deliver activity groups.
  • Manage all aspects of Adult Learning sessions at the Centre, including responsibility for recruitment and management of Tutors, and ensuring that all course delivery requirements and associated evidence such as monitoring logs for reporting purposes is kept to high standards.
  • Ensure that all learning and development activities are delivered within a safeguarding adults framework and that any safeguarding concerns are reported.
  • Build strong links with community organisations and work with them to support wider engagement with AAC members / Recovery Café customers.
  • Provide mental health resources to customers and members, supporting access to opportunities for recovery and rehabilitation and community capacity building.
  • Work with the AAC TL and Recovery Café TM to review the social inclusion progress of AAC members / Recovery Café customers.
  • Be responsible for the day to day management of an allocated number of volunteers.
  • To work closely with external activity / learning providers in maximising the use of external funding opportunities for the AAC / RC.
  • To assist the AAC and RC in the planning and delivery of each service's activities timetables.

About you

  • Experience of working with people requiring support related to mental health and complex needs.
  • Experience of working with older / senior adults / vulnerable adults and how to identify and report any safeguarding concerns.
  • Experience of facilitating learning and development activities, groupwork or support groups.
  • Excellent knowledge of issues related to signs, symptoms and treatment of mental health issues.
  • Ability to identify and report any H & S concerns in a day centre setting. The ability to engage and communicate effectively with others, verbally and in writing.
  • IT literate with excellent Microsoft Office skills and the ability to learn and use new apps.
  • The ability to receive, process and accurately record detailed information, sharing it with others as appropriate and within the framework of confidentiality
  • The confidence to liaise effectively with others both inside and outside of the organisation, being a positive and professional representative for Hestia at all times.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good time management.
  • Good team working skills with the ability to work unsupervised.
  • A solution focused approach and the capacity to work constructively and collaboratively towards problem solving.
