Agile delivery is about creating fast iterations of services based on the feedback of real users.

It means regularly releasing small pieces of functionality, constant communication between team members, and creating transparency across the team about progress and activity by using walls or online tools.

Delivery Leads advance the Delivery community through sharing of best practice and mentoring others.

Purpose statements:
An Agile Delivery Lead is accountable for the performance of the team. They;

  • Build and maintain high performing teams; ensuring they are motivated, collaborating and working well
  • Maintain a clear sense of direction and purpose for the team based on the project vision.
  • Work with the team to identify obstacles and help the team to overcome them
  • Facilitate planning sessions to help the team focus on what is most important to be worked on.
  • Encourage end to end thinking and facilitates sessions to evolve the continuous improvement agenda their delivery team / teams
  • Initiate and facilitate open communication between team members and stakeholders, creating a safe environment of transparency and openness.

Knowledge statements:

  • Essential confident practitioner_
  • Able to identify and compare the best processes or delivery methods to use. Strong Delivery Leads are able to recognise when decisions carry risk, and encourage the team to adopt an experimentation mindset to mitigate these risks.
  • Able to facilitate the delivery flow of a team, managing the pace and tempo. Able to actively address internal and external risks, issues and dependencies including where ownership exists outside the team. They also ensure teams plan appropriately for their own capacity.
  • Able to understand the needs of both technical and business stakeholders and, when necessary, interpret between them. Strong Delivery Leads are therefore able to manage stakeholders' expectations and are not afraid to facilitate difficult conversations.
  • Able to use data intelligently to inform planning and prioritisation. Strong Delivery Leads are able to manage complex internal and external dependencies in order to provide greater delivery confidence.
  • Delivery Leads work continuously with their team to remove blockers or impediments that affect delivery.
  • Complementary working knowledge_
  • Able to bring people together to form a motivated team who feel empowered to delivery outcomes. They are therefore able to help create the right environment for a team to work in, recognising and dealing with issues and able to facilitate the right session depending on the situation.
  • Able to balance cost versus value. Able to consider the impact of user needs. Able to report on financial delivery. Able to monitor cost and budget and escalate issues.
  • Recognises when to move from one stage of a product lifecycle to another. Ensures the team is working towards the appropriate product/service standards for the relevant phase. Able to manage the delivery products or product/services at different phases.

Personal attribute/skills:

  • Communicate effectively and clearly even when under pressure.
  • Engage confidently with stakeholders and communicate project information in a clear way, including when communicating difficult messages.
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops with people from all levels of seniority, without bias.
  • Communicate, promote and coach the use of agile and lean methodologies to the team and relevant/interested stakeholders.
  • Maintain a positive team mood and focus, if confronted with difficult and challenging circumstances.
  • Can adapt and reflect, is resilient and has the ability to see outside of the process. Strong Delivery Leads use this skill to help their teams to manage and visualise outcomes.
