We are looking to appoint an individual with experience of working with children with complex presentations and neurological difficulties, who has previously worked in an orthopaedic setting. You will need skills in postural management, manual handling and have the competencies required to assess for equipment to enable occupational engagement, particularly in relation to self-care activities.

The role involves pre-op assessment, post-op intervention and seating assessments for children undergoing complex orthopaedic surgery in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Surgery is predominately lower limb and spinal, but there are also a small number of upper limb orthopaedic procedures undertaken. Liaison with children's local services is paramount to ensure continuity of care and safe discharge and expert communication skills are therefore a necessity. The role also involves input to the Pan Hospital Wheelchair Service and previous experience of assessing for and providing a wide range of wheelchairs and seating systems is required.

You will be one of five Occupational Therapists working in this team and the post is line managed by the Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist in Orthopaedics and Spines. As a senior member of this team, the post-holder will also be responsible for prioritisation and delegation of duties to others on a day to day basis. They will also supervise a Band 6 Occupational Therapist as well as students.

Main duties of the job
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients individual caseloads must be organised effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities
  • To carry out pre and postoperative assessments which may include both standardised and non-standardised assessments of posture, sensory function, joint range, movement and muscle tone
  • To carry out functional assessment using recognised assessment tools where appropriate. Findings should be used to inform child and family-centred goals.

  • To plan and implement individual interventions to optimise a child's potential for development or recovery of function using specific techniques and/or equipment, in collaboration with the children and parents, local services and the MDT
  • To be responsible for maintaining your competency to practice through reflective practice and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. This will involve keeping up to date with current clinical practice and new developments and incorporating them as necessary into your work. The Post holder will also be required to maintain a portfolio / learning record which reflects personal development commensurate with this level
  • To be an active member of the in-service training programme and to present at staff meetings as appropriate.

  • To represent the Trust regarding Occupational Therapy Services provided to patients within your clinical area.

  • Health & Care Professions Council registration
  • Evidence of relevant CPD
Desirable
  • Post-graduate training in equipment prescription.
  • MSc in a relevant field to OT
Experience/Knowledge Essential
  • Previous experience working as an Occupational Therapist with individuals with physical disabilities and providing occupational therapy to address occupational performance difficulties that result from disability or trauma.
  • Excellent understanding of orthopaedic paediatric conditions & the therapeutic interventions indicated to support occupational engagement
  • Post-graduate experience working in orthopaedics with children and young people
  • Experience implementing the principals of 24 hour postural management, including the use of equipment to achieve this.
  • Experience of assessing for and providing equipment for daily living including: specialist seating, wheelchairs, and manual handling equipment and bathing / showering equipment.
  • Previous experience of supervision and line management
  • Previous experience of service development and quality improvement
  • Understanding of Diversity and Inclusion challenges in the workplace.
Desirable
  • Involvement in clinical support networks relevant to paediatric occupational therapy.
  • Awareness of national initiatives and legislation pertaining to Health and Social Care and the relevance to Occupational Therapy provision within a tertiary setting.
Skills/Abilities Essential
  • Able to work cooperatively and constructively within OT and multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work autonomously, under the supervision of a senior therapist, setting own priorities and working to deadlines.
  • Able to make decisions relating to the moving and handling of orthopaedic paediatric patients.
  • Ability to clearly articulate and communicate the role of the OT within Orthopaedics and the value it offers children and their families for their well-being, safety and independence skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organisation, computer and time management skills
