The role of Programme Sponsor is a critical post within the NERC Major Programmes Team, providing the programme management and business leadership needed to deliver and maintain large and complex infrastructure in support of the NERC Strategy.

You will help lead the delivery of some of NERC's largest science infrastructure programmes, including the Net Zero Oceanography project working to reduce our carbon impact of marine research, the development of a network of instruments and digital tools within the Floods and Droughts Infrastructure Programme, the innovating research being done of the UK's subsurface within the UKGEOS project and the upgrade to an aircraft equipped to be a flying laboratory.


You will be directly supporting project leaders and the project managers, leading on the creation and development of the projects' business cases, ensuring they are compelling and deliverable, and setting out the approvals and assurance routes in the early stages.

The role requires you to evaluate ideas, be a motivational and inspiring leader and build project teams with strong connections and a robust approach.

You will be working to embed sustainability in both the construction and operation phases. You will have an active board and project team level participation in all projects you cover.

This role has a focus on supporting our Airborne Laboratory based at Cranfield.

The aircraft is currently going through a mid-life upgrade to its systems and scientific instrumentation and has a long-term strategy to be carbon neutral.

As well as supporting this project as NERC's 'Designated officer', you will be required to:

  • Attend key project meetings to represent NERC/UKRI as owners of the aircraft.
  • Set the requirements of governance, assurance & reporting that NERC/UKRI need from the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) and its contractors, supported by contracted aviation specialists as required.
  • Provide a conduit to between FAAM & the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and NERC/UKRI.

  • Proven track record of delivering results in the programme/project environment, with the ability to provide direction and mobilise people and work at pace whilst maintaining a high standard
  • Excellent leadership skills, able to inspire and lead large, complex multistakeholder projects with individuals from multiple organisations and multiple disciplines
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to influence and build and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, adaptable and proactive with the ability to work flexibly in a changing environment
  • Ability to instil confidence within stakeholders at the most senior levels
  • Insightful business awareness with the ability capitalise on emerging opportunities, construct robust and compelling business cases, make sound evidencebased judgements and promote the interests of UKRI-NERC
  • A strong sense of personal resilience and ability to remain focused on the bigger picture
  • Ability to anticipate strategic risks and take a strategic view on how they can be addressed or mitigated
  • Experience of contract management
