Main Duties and Responsibilities To work independently with CYP, who are under the care of the LSCIC consultants on the ward or therapy environment, to deliver and evaluate their care and report back to registered nursing staff as appropriate.

To support non SCIC CYP with basic nursing and personal care. To deliver and evaluate care and assistance to CYP both in the hospital and community settings, e.g. home, nursing homes, NHS facilities.


Promote, encourage and provide the means for social reintegration to them under the care of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre (SCIC) team.

Liaise with SCIC team and other members of the MDT regarding social reintegration and community inclusion activities. Assist in organising appropriate sports/leisure /community activities.

To maintain and renew the specific competencies required to provide autonomous care to those CYP who require mechanical ventilation To deliver care to CYP requiring mechanical ventilation both internally and externally, and independently, using specific knowledge, to adjust care as their condition warrants and/or in emergency situations outside the ward environment.


To demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of long term effects and challenges facing those with a spinal cord injury.

At the request of a Case Managers assist to plan, then implement and deliver care to specific CYP.

Evaluate the care and assist in the formulation of a community care plan with the Case Manager prior to discharge Ensure all CYP have the opportunity and means to participate in all aspects of social reintegration activities.

Provide education regarding spinal cord injury and individual care needs to CYP, families and community professionals.

Work collaboratively with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams and attend multi-professional meetings as appropriate. Due to the nature of the post, flexible working practices are required.

To undertake risk assessments on CYP prior to leaving the clinical area with appropriate members of the MDT Provide an appropriate handover of their needs through written and verbal education and practical demonstration to CYP, families, and community professionals in a variety of clinical/community settings.

Provide a written and verbal handover of outcomes of outings/meetings or discharge as required by Case Managers /MDT.

Ensure that when going off Trust grounds with CYP any medication, supplies and equipment are available as required. Undertake appropriate risk assessments prior to commencing and during community activities.

To report any untoward incidents to the Ward Manager/Case Manager and participate in the Trust Risk Management process as appropriate.

To report to the appropriate member of staff any problems encountered on activities whilst respecting confidentiality.


To be aware and take appropriate actions relating to any concerns under safeguarding Children Policy and Safeguarding vulnerable adults Policy To undertake a familiarization session relating to the SCIC vehicles in order to become a regular driver of the SCIC vehicles.

Arrange the servicing and maintenance of SCIC vehicles.

Participate in the guidelines for the use of SCIC vehicles To conduct familiarization sessions for new drivers To ensure travel receipts are processed in accordance with department and trust procedures.

Ensure that all equipment used is appropriate.

Observe a personal duty of care when using equipment. To be proficient in all aspects of setting up, using and maintaining sensitive medical equipment, e.g. ventilators, humidifiers, environmental controls Ensure you remain contactable during working hours. Attend mandatory training as required.

Participate in agreed Appraisals and Personal Development Plan. Adhere to the specific uniform policy as agreed locally.

To record information using IT as requested by Case Manager/supervisor Obtain and maintain the specific competencies to deliver the PASRP role.

To assist and supervise facilitation of the Rehabilitation Assistants & Health Care Assistants within the ward environment in relation to care delivery for spinal cord injured CYPs as requested by ward manager Undertake handover sessions to staff caring for CYPs during the discharge process from Spinal Cord Injury centre The post-holder will be required to maintain an understanding and overview of health processes and procedures affecting SCI CYPs, as well as an awareness of social care issues.

Undertakes surveys or audits as requested to own work. Hold a current full UK Driving licence.
