The main purpose of the role is to support the care, rehabilitation, reintegration and discharge of Children and Young People (CYP) with spinal cord injury and those with associated complex needs.

Post holder may be required to support with the care of other CYP on Coxen to ensure quality and safe clinical care for the service and when this is deemed appropriate.

In conjunction with other members of the Multi-Disciplinary team. Promote and encourage social reintegration for CYP with spinal cord injury through sports, leisure and activities of daily living.

Ensure continuity of appropriate care education and discharge preparation through close liaison and handover of care needs to CYP, families, and relevant community professionals.

Responsibilities:


To work independently with CYP, who are under the care of the LSCIC consultants on the ward or therapy environment, to deliver and evaluate their care and report back to registered nursing staff as appropriate.

To support non SCIC CYP with basic nursing and personal care.

To deliver and evaluate care and assistance to CYP both in the hospital and community settings, e.g. home, nursing homes, NHS facilities.


Promote, encourage and provide the means for social reintegration to them under the care of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre (SCIC) team.

Liaise with SCIC team and other members of the MDT regarding social reintegration and community inclusion activities. Assist in organising appropriate sports/leisure /community activities.

To maintain and renew the specific competencies required to provide autonomous care to those CYP who require mechanical ventilation


To deliver care to CYP requiring mechanical ventilation both internally and externally, and independently, using specific knowledge, to adjust care as their condition warrants and/or in emergency situations outside the ward environment.


To demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of long term effects and challenges facing those with a spinal cord injury.

At the request of a Case Manager's assist to plan, then implement and deliver care to specific CYP.

Evaluate the care and assist in the formulation of a community care plan with the Case Manager prior to discharge.

Provide education regarding spinal cord injury and individual care needs to CYP, families and community professionals.

Work collaboratively with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams and attend multi-professional meetings as appropriate.

Due to the nature of the post, flexible working practices are required.

To undertake risk assessments on CYP prior to leaving the clinical area with appropriate members
