About the role and what we're looking for


The aim of the housing needs team is to ensure that people in housing need have access to the housing and support necessary to meet their requirements.


We are now recruiting for a Lettings Assistant who will play a key role in meeting these aims by providing an efficient and effective housing service.


Main duties and responsibilities:

- to liaise with landlords in the private sector to secure private rent tenancies for our customers.
- to set up tenancies, including, property inspections, completing tenancy agreements, facilitating in-going and exit inventories for landlords. To be responsible for carrying out tenancy management in accordance with council policies, health and safety requirements,approved codes of practice and industry best practice.
- a responsibility to acquire and maintain knowledge of health and safety legislation and council policies in relation to private rented accommodation.

  • To provide intensive support to the customer at the commencement of their tenancy. This will include insuring that the appropriate benefits have been accessed, accompanying them to the job centre where necessary.
- to liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure appropriate support packages are in place for our customers in private rented accommodation.
- to maintain accurate computer records for all White Horse Lettings tenants.
- to offer advice and assistance on matters relating to the councils housing register and choice-based lettings scheme.
- to liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure appropriate support packages are in place for nominated applicants.
- to produce statistics and reports regarding White Horse Lettings tenants, for the allocations team, in relation to choice based lettings
- assist in the implementation of new policies, procedures, and legislation.
- to attend and participate in meetings and training events as required.

  • To become familiar with the payment system, Unit 4, and the Housing Register.
- any other duties relevant to the position and appropriate to the grading of the post.

Your essential skills, knowledge and experience
- experience of dealing with vulnerable, and in some cases distressed people
- a good knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to letting, maintenance and managing accommodation
- experience of face-to-face contact with customers
- good oral and written communication skills
- good interpersonal skills
- understanding of confidentiality
- experience of working well in a team
- full driving license and use of a car insured for business use

Your essential qualifications

  • 5 GCSE's at grades A C, including English and Mathematics, or an
- equivalent level of qualification
- full driving license and use of a car insured for business use

- knowledge of tenancy law and housing legislation
- knowledge of welfare rights
- familiarity with the district
- experience of working in local government
