Are you fed up of the constant struggle to complete WBAs? Do you want some time off the training treadmill to pursue your interests in medicine?

We are looking to recruit a Clinical Fellow to our friendly and busy, brand new, state of the art Critical Care Unit at Northampton General Hospital.

This will be a 1 year post working in critical care alongside 'fellow project' related activities and development, with the possibility for extension.

There will be opportunity to develop anaesthetic skills with time in theatre and also the possible funding for a PG certificate in a related field.


This is an exciting time to join Northampton General Hospital as we develop our Academic Strategy towards University Hospital status.


Alongside clinical duties you will be allowed to take fellow days to work on your projects from your chosen area.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in the Critical Care rota (full shift), as well as the day-to-day clinical and managerial running of the critical care unit.

The rota is staffed by doctors of varying seniority from a range of specialties. It is expected that individual staff perform at a level that is consistent with their grade/ experience.

You will be expected to be actively involved in handover of patients, ward rounds, clinical procedures, clerking, transfers, following up on investigations, documentation to maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients.

We also offer time in theatres with our post to further develop anaesthetic skills if this is desired.

Educational opportunities

The department offer extensive learning resources in addition to an active Medical Education Centre and supportive library service.

There are regular educational meetings each week including journal club, M&M, ITU rounds, point of care simulation and regular junior and senior ITU teaching.


There are opportunities to further develop teaching skills with the senior medical students and Foundation Year 1 doctors working in Critical Care.

The rota is EWTD compliant and includes evening, night and weekend shifts within the work pattern.

Our critical care unit currently comprises 16 beds and is staffed by 10 consultants together with a team of 20 FTE junior staff.

The wider anaesthetic department has 43 Consultants along with 6 specialty doctors. Our department is dynamic, enthusiastic and fully committed to governance, development and training.

As such, a number of us have taken on major roles within the NHS including College examiners, a Deputy Medical Director, and the Director & deputy of Medical Education.

The Clinical Fellows will be allocated an Educational Supervisor and will undergo regular appraisal and develop a learning plan and portfolio.

The exact nature of the role will be finalised by mutual agreement once the appointment is made.

The details of the PG Certificate and time allocation for the other education duties will be agreed with the educational supervisor and clinical fellow lead at the start of the post.


The successful applicant should be aware that a PG Cert requires a significant amount of self-directed learning in their own time, but we will provide contribution to funding and the time required for any uni contact days (up to 10 days).
