The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) team as a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Manager, on a fixed-term basis. As PPIE and EDI Manager within the NIHR Research Support Service, you will work with partners locally and nationally, other NIHR RSS hubs and Specialist Centres across England and the NIHR RSS National Collaborative function. You will also work with external stakeholders, partners and networks including universities, public organisations and voluntary and community sector partners.

This is a key role within the NIHR RSS delivered by Newcastle University and Partners, ensuring that patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) considerations are embedded into research support. You will be responsible to the NIHR RSS's Newcastle University and Partners Strategic Lead for PPIE and to stakeholders across England. The post holder will contribute to and work to realise the NIHR RSS's PPIE and EDI strategic aims and objectives and will be the first point of contact for PPIE and EDI within the team. The role requires an extensive understanding and experience of patient and public involvement and engagement and EDI, with the aim of ensuring that research developments are inclusive.

Our vision is to support research with a new way of working, supported by a new generation of researchers, developed through a new model, integrating research development, design and delivery in health, social care, and public health.

You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, extensive experience of public involvement and engagement working with diverse communities, and will be able to develop and implement resources to facilitate reporting, monitoring and evaluation of PPIE and EDI activities including appropriate data capture systems to monitor requirements.

Key Accountabilities

Work across the NIHR RSS nationally, with the National Collaborative function, to support the implementation of the NIHR RSS PPIE and EDI strategies. Adapt the national strategy to develop and implement the NIHR RSS's PPIE and EDI action plans, to ensure that PPIE and EDI is embedded in all the NIHR RSS Newcastle and partners activity Work with the NIHR RSS Newcastle and partner Strategic Lead for PPIE and the national strategic leads to support the development and co-ordination of a diverse Public Advisory Forum to ensure that PPIE and EDI underpin the activities and that there is equitable access to the NIHR RSS's service Work with the other NIHR RSS hubs nationally, to lead and coordinate programmes of work relating to PPIE and EDI, building on existing networks and partnerships with community and voluntary groups and developing new opportunities for involvement in both the NIHR RSS's capacity building programme with partners and the design and delivery of research Working with the national collaborative to develop and co-ordinate a programme of national events, training and capacity building activities and resources around PPIE and EDI for researchers, partners, academics, the NIHR RSS's methodologists, and public partners, including horizon scanning to identify priority areas. Work with the national NIHR RSS Communications Manager to promote events and resources through appropriate communication channels Manage the applications to the NIHR RSS's Public Involvement and Engagement Fund, including access by researchers to funding for public involvement and EDI activities both to inform the development of funding applications and to trial new approaches to public involvement and community engagement Develop and implement resources to facilitate reporting, monitoring and evaluation of PPIE and EDI activities including appropriate data capture systems to monitor requirements and activity with a particular focus on demonstrating and recording impact Represent the NIHR RSS hub at a national level pertaining to PPIE and EDI and deliver presentations at events, conferences, and meetings to promote the NIHR RSS to a wide range of stakeholders Remain up to date with RSS and NIHR national developments on PPIE and EDI, sharing details with researchers, RSS partners, methodologists, academics and RSS colleagues

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Experience of successfully developing and implementing PPIE and EDI strategies Experience of leading successful PPIE projects ideally in or transferrable to a research setting Experience of working with public contributors and a diverse range of marginalised groups to develop processes and practices to achieve agreed objectives Experience in developing, facilitating, and delivering training on topics related to PPIE and EDI for researchers and/or the public High level of decision making and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrable ability to lead initiatives, prioritise and plan appropriately within a strategic framework Strong communication and interpersonal skills including diplomacy, motivation, negotiating and influencing Success in developing effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, across a range of disciplines and with the public contributors Experience of training public contributors Excellent organisational and time management skills to manage and deliver a range of initiatives and projects to tight deadlines Experienced financial manager Ability to work independently, and to make decisions on complex or overlapping matters Ability to understand and interpret complex ideas and communicate these simply to broad audiences, whilst maintaining meticulous attention to detail

Desirable

Knowledge of NIHR, health research or other related research field Experience of working in or with local government and/or voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSE) or evidence of an understanding of local government and VCSE

Qualifications

Degree or equivalent level qualification plus experience in a similar role or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development through progressively more demanding, relevant roles
