The Role


To provide high quality teaching to undergraduate students within the school, and students from outside the School taking service courses.

Applications are invited for a Lecturer within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. The post is offered as fixed-term for 12 months to commence September 2023. The post holder will provide high quality teaching to undergraduate students within the School.

We are looking for an enthusiastic academic with expertise in any area of Physics or Astrophysics.

All staff are encouraged to use tested innovative teaching practices so there will be opportunities for peer observation in order to develop your own practice.

We have undergraduate progammes in Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics.

Key Accountabilities
To take full responsibility as module leader for teaching specific courses as directed by the Head of School. This will include preparation of all materials, delivery of lectures and tutorials, and all assessment. The modules to be taught will be discussed with the Director of Pure Mathematics.
To contribute to the teaching and assessment of other modules. This might include delivery of tutorials, supervision of group projects, and marking of assignments and examinations.

To contribute to the school's recruitment and outreach activities as directed by the Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching.

As a full member of the school, to participate in relevant School Committees such as Board of Examiners. The Person (Essential)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Have or be close to completion of a PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, or a related discipline.
Ability to teach and assess a range of physics courses autonomously.
Broad knowledge of physics as taught in Stage 1 of the Newcastle programmes in Physics.
Specialist knowledge of high-level material as taught at Stages 2-4 of the Newcastle BSc & MPhys degrees.
Willingness to assist with the administration of the school.
Evidence of analytical and problem-solving capability, with the relevant personal skills, initiative, and drive.
Effective time management and prioritisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
