Research Assistant/Associate in Astrophysics and Cosmology

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Assistant/Associate to join our team in the Department of Physics at Newcastle University. The successful candidate will have a strong background in astrophysics and cosmology, with experience in analyzing and modeling data from probes of large-scale structures, particularly weak gravitational lensing and intrinsic alignments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in the areas of astrophysics and cosmology, with a focus on weak gravitational lensing and intrinsic alignments.
  • Present research findings in written and oral form, including publications and conference presentations.
  • Collaborate with the research team and wider collaborators, including travel to international conferences and meetings.
  • Contribute to the positive culture and general strengths of the research groups and the institutes, including supervision of project students, participation in outreach, and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Requirements
  • A PhD in a relevant discipline for appointment at Research Associate level, or about to obtain a PhD in a relevant discipline for appointment at Research Assistant level.
  • A track record of high-quality research outputs related to the goals of the project, including publications, software, and research tools.
  • Experience in analyzing and/or modeling data from probes of large-scale structures, particularly weak gravitational lensing and intrinsic alignments.
  • Good data management and analytical skills, with the ability to work methodically and accurately in designing, executing, and writing up research independently.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrable experience in analyzing and working with simulated data, particularly from hydrodynamical simulations.
  • Developing or utilizing the Halo Model formalism.
  • Direct IA measurements or modeling.
  • Beyond 2-point analysis or modeling.
Attributes and Behaviour
  • Ability to think critically and work rigorously.
  • Ability to work using own initiative to meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate research at national and international conferences, to fellow academics in other disciplines, and to stakeholders.
  • The ability to work independently and as cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings and working on joint research projects.
