The Faculty Academic Support Lead will be a highly visible presence within the academic

area, working with both academic colleagues and students. They will lead high-quality

curriculum support initiatives that enhance student engagement, retention and

progression and coordinate the activities of personal academic tutors. They have a pivotal

role in promoting student success within the relevant Faculty

Key Responsibilities

and Accountabilities:

  • Promote the principles of fairness, diversity and equality of opportunity along with an
inclusive, team-oriented approach.

  • Lead the delivery of plans to improve student retention and success within the relevant
School.

  • Establish and maintain proactive working relationships with academic colleagues to
enable effective collaborative working in support of improved student retention and
success.

  • Lead and coordinate Faculty Personal Academic Tutoring in line with University policy,
to provide excellent academic support for students.

  • Liaise with The Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching to develop Personal
Academic Tutoring practice, ensuring this complements the work of the University
Progression Team and central student support.

  • Proactively liaise and coordinate with other Faculty Academic Support Leads, or
equivalent, to promote and disseminate good practice associated with student support
and retention.

  • In liaison with the relevant Personal Academic Tutor, undertake case work with students
exhibiting low engagement levels and/or are deemed to be at risk of withdrawal or
academic failure.

  • Collate any relevant data and coordinate activities, as determined by the Academic
Dean and/or Head of School to support student retention and success.

  • Maintain academic credibility by contributing towards student teaching, learning and

commitment to personal development.

  • Identify programme / module level barriers to student engagement and success, and
recommend implementation strategies to address these. Take any relevant actions to
implement any agreed strategies.

  • Undertake teaching activities that are directed to students most in need of academic
support, such as tutorial or other support for those students deemed to be at risk of
withdrawal.

  • Articulate an appropriate Faculty delivery strategy for improved student retention and
attainment.

  • Advise and report to the Academic Dean or nominated Head of School in relation to the
successful implementation of student retention activities, and the monitoring of key
performance indicators.

  • Analyse available data to a high level on student retention, engagement and success
outcomes (including student withdrawals, leave of absence and academic failure) in
relation to protected characteristics, demographic characteristics or other recognised
variables.

  • Work proactively with the Students' Union and University directorates responsible for
the student experience with the aim of continuously improving retention and the wider
student experience.

  • Represent the Faculty or School on University committees or working groups as required
and contribute appropriately to developments related to student retention and
attainment.

  • Able to independently prioritise workload and manage deadlines to meet agreed
objectives

Special Circumstances:

On occasion, to work outside normal working hours to support School / Faculty activities.

Any other duties appropriate to the post and the grade.

**Qualifications and Professional Memberships: - Relevant undergraduate qualification or equivalent professional qualification.

  • Higher education teaching qualification.
  • Senior Fellowship with Advance HE.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Recent experience in higher education teaching (within the relevant discipline areas set
out in the advert for the role), curriculum quality enhancement, design and review.

  • Insight into and a practical understanding of the factors which can create obstacles to
learning, and successful experience of encouraging participatory activity by students.

  • Knowledge of the current academic discourse regarding the student retention and
attainment in the UK Higher Education sector.

  • Record of successful academic leadership activities.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the Higher Education United Kingdom regulatory
frameworks, such as the Office for Students, Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies

(PSRB) and appreciation of the wide range of external factors, policies and trends that are

affecting HE.

  • Experience of project management including examples of delivering innovative solutions
and practical outputs.
