The Defence Afghan Relocation and Resettlement (DARR) Directorate is an organisation set up to manage the process for identifying eligible Afghans who supported the UK mission in Afghanistan over the past 20 years to come to the UK, and once here to be assisted to begin their new lives with their families. It is important and rewarding work, supporting one of Defence's highest priorities.

The Directorate is responsible for assessing the applications of Afghans who still wish to relocate to the UK, enabling the relocation of those eligible, and directing and cohering all of the relocation and resettlement activity across the Defence enterprise. Teams work in lockstep with a number of Departments across Whitehall to ensure the relocation and resettlement of eligible Afghans.

As a Case Worker your main responsibilities will be:

  • Lead a Casework Team, with line management responsibility for C2 Civil Servants and task management of contingent workforce recruits. The postholder will oversee and contribute towards the following activities:
  • Make autonomous and sound decisions in accordance with relevant Government Policy.
  • Where appropriate, seek guidance from colleagues, SMEs and technical specialists.
  • Deal with sensitive and personal information in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
  • Communicate directly with applicants, dealing promptly with queries in a sensitive and respectful manner, identifying if translation or interpretation is required to better aid the applicant.
  • Manage an individual's case progress.
  • Work with stakeholders across government to ensure safe transit to the UK, engaging (and in some instances assisting) with processes such as visa applications.
  • Carefully analyse evidence provided and requesting further information from various stakeholders (including applicants) where necessary.
  • Flag cases of interest such as Additional Family Members (AFM) or non-progressive cases
  • Facilitate the collection of biographics
  • Where needed, act as a liaison for Embassies around the world to share information, aid decision making and provide a point of contact for applicants.
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to Casework, DARR, MOD and cross-HMG stakeholders, cultivating positive working relationships a variety of stakeholders to support and drive forward Defence DARR priorities
  • Oversee the recording and utilisation of casework data for various uses, including generating management information, providing statistics for internal and external reporting, and in order to contribute to discussions on decision rates, flow rates and resource projections
  • Relocation Casework as required

  • Ability to store, present and sort data to meet desired outcome (this must be in line with GDPR and DARR/ ARAP IM guidance)
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, work at pace, be compassionate and respectful of others always.
  • High level of resilience, flexibility, strong team worker who is willing to assist other team members.
  • Confidence to make autonomous decisions, while willing to ask for guidance in the more contentious/ complex cases.
  • Strong problem-solving and investigative skills to overcome technical and information barriers
  • Strong IT skills, with experience working with SharePoint and excel
  • Competency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Experience of working within a caseworking role / environment
