  • If you're part of the Environment Agency, you're part of the solution. Working together to deal with a range of environmental issues and promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and create a better future for everyone.

We're looking for an experienced person to join the Cornwall Field Monitoring Team and undertake environmental monitoring including river and bathing water quality, effluents, macroinvertebrates, diatoms, groundwater and fisheries.

You will work towards qualifying as an Officer-in-Charge for electric fishing surveys and will be involved in boat work, so experience of fieldwork and biosecurity good practice is essential.

You will be using a scheduling tool and utilising this technology to enhance delivery. You will maintain, interpret, and input data into monitoring systems and databases. You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
The field work can be physically demanding, and you will be required to work in all weathers.

You'll be working alone for long periods of time, so you'll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and Wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised.

You will also have an incident role.

  • The team
  • We collect fieldbased samples and environmental data for local, national and statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information to serve diverse community and environmental needs.
The Cornwall team is dispersed. This post will include work across Cornwall and in West and North Devon, Plymouth and surrounding areas. You will be expected to cross boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.

  • Experience/skills required
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Experience/Skills required:

  • Field sample collection experience
  • Ecology sampling including kick sampling for macroinvertebrates
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
  • Good organisational skills
  • Working in water confidently and safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
  • Experience of using standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems and databases
  • Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments
  • Freshwater fish identification
  • Experience of biosecurity procedures
  • Confidence in driving long distances in urban and rural environments

Desirable:

  • Electric fishing experience
  • Contact and additional informationYou will be provided with a badged vehicle which can be located at home. The base location for this role is Bodmin where you will drop off samples most days. Most of the time you will be outside collecting data from locations across Cornwall and West Devon.
