London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

Barts Health NHS Trust has a vision to be a high performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for providing safe and compassionate care to patients in East London and beyond.

The Trust comprises of St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Royal London (RLH) and Mile End Hospitals (MEH), Whipps Cross and Newham University Hospitals.

In keeping with the recommendations of the Richards Review of Diagnostics, we are developing a Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) at Mile End Hospital.

The CDC is part of a wider programme to reform and renew the delivery of diagnostics to meet increasing demand for services.

CDCs will facilitate patients having their diagnostic tests performed closer to home and within the local community and will be open for 12 hours a day over 7 days a week. We provide Radiation Safety support for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust.

The Barts and RLH sites have been built and equipped under a PFI and have a range of digital imaging equipment.

We have an opportunity for a DR / RP Medical Physicist with experience in CT Physics, to act as the lead MPE for the Mile End CDC and the cross site Trust Lead MPE for CT. The Radiation Safety Section is based at RLH.

To act as an appointed Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology for the Trust and for outside contracts, as required under The Ionising Radiation Regulations and The Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations respectively.

To assist with the management and provision of radiation safety advice and services for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust and diagnostic radiology physics support to the Trust and to other organisations who have contracts with Clinical Physics and in particular to act as the Radiation Safety lead RPA/MPE for the Mile End Community Diagnostic Centre. There are 12 other diagnostic CT scanners in the Trust, plus a radiotherapy planning CT, and SPECT/CT, PET/CT scanners.

  • Working with CDC management team to ensure a governance and quality assurance structure for radiation safety and diagnostic radiology physics is in place
  • Training of physics staff in CT performance evaluation
