Overall purpose of the role:

Ensuring environmental, health & safety management and co-ordination of

  • Legal compliance
  • Ways of working to ensure safety & health of employees and visitors whilst protecting the environment
  • Creating a collaborative, positive EHS culture delivering continuous improvement

Key areas of responsibility:

EHS (Environment, Health & Safety):

  • Ensure legal & regulatory compliance in a pragmatic manner suitable for an SME
  • Ensure compliance to insurance requirements
  • Responsible for developing site EHS programme with Operations director and working with the wider business to ensure delivery and year on year improvements
  • With Production & Engineering Mgr ensure EHS requirements evaluated & managed as part of all projects, contractor work and new equipment selection & installation
  • With Production & Engineering Mgr responsible for overall management systems and control of Contractors, RAMS & Permit to Work System
  • Ensure required EHS training plan in place and delivered to meet legal & business needs (including some delivery)
  • Responsible for developing & managing the occupational health plan for staff wellness & health surveillance checks
  • Deliver programmes to improve understanding, awareness & behaviours to eliminate accidents & incidents
  • Develop and measure appropriate EHS KPI's to drive improvement
  • Ensure near misses, incidents & accidents are investigated and actions arising are completed in a timely manner
  • Ensure statutory checks and assessments completed to time with actions arising completed in a timely manner liaising with Operations Director as relevant
  • Work closely with the team to ensure the correct standards are maintained or improved as necessary
  • In agreement with Operations Director set standards and organisation of any EHS equipment used on site
  • Chair Safety Action Team meetings
  • Responsible for waste management incl liaison with HMRC as required
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate operational emergency response plans in place and trained. Member or Emergency Response Team.
  • Lead agreed EHS projects
  • Responsible for delivery of relevant B-Corp elements incl Responsible for measurement, coordination & facilitation of the company environmental improvement programme and with the Operations Director the Environmental Management System
  • Actively support and suggest sustainable goals linked to your role including environment, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure suppliers that you deal with act in both a sustainable and responsible (environmental and social) manner and highlight any concerns/issues. Comply to the Ethical Trade Policy.

Quality

  • Responsible for ensuring any EHS policy & procedures required are in place, current & align with ISO procedures and requirements
  • Responsible for adhering to relevant site BRC standards and delivering customer (EHS) requirements
  • Support a Quality Assurance culture
  • Develop and deliver a continuous improvement safety culture, identify and justify opportunities for improvement using knowledge & experience of industry best practice

Cost

  • Manage spend to agreed EHS cost centres

People

  • Ensure effective communication & engagement processes are in place to deliver programmes successfully, creating a collaborative, positive EHS culture

Cover

  • Ensure provision made to cover any requirements when off site

Security

  • Be vigilant of employees, contractors and visitors on site. Intervene where suspicion of illegal activity is perceived.
  • Member of site Key Holder & response team
  • Support the Engineering Mgr in maintaining site security procedures

General

  • Understand & work to HMRC requirements for Excise warehouse status
  • Other appropriate tasks that may be required from time to time.

Qualifications/Experience required:

  • Ideally Degree level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5yrs experience in environment, safety & health management
  • Experience of leading & delivering improvement programmes & engaging people
  • Professional qualification in safety, health & environmental management or equivalent (NEBOSH, IOSH)
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment ideally Food / Chemical industry
  • Ideally experience on a site with DSEAR, ATEX environments / in an SME
  • Ideally Mental Health First Aider trained

  • Able to work in a fast paced, complex environment, prioritise workload and deliver requirements across a broad agenda
