  • Job description
  • We're looking for a Field Monitoring Officer to help us deliver a highquality environmental monitoring service. The work is varied and involves collecting samples and data from rivers, discharges, boreholes, groundwater sources and coastal waters. You will be part of the electric fishing survey team and expected to work towards qualifying as Officer In Charge. Some boat work is involved.
An experienced field worker, you will have knowledge of risk assessment and biosecurity good practice.

You will use a scheduling tool, enter data on smart phone or tablet, and ensure our site information records are accurately maintained, so an understanding of the importance of accurate data collection is essential.

You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will be expected to train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
You'll enjoy working outdoors in all weathers in a physically demanding job.

Although part of a wider supportive team you will be working alone for most of the time, so you'll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and Wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised.

There will also be opportunity to support the Environment Agency's Incident response.

  • The team
  • We collect fieldbased samples and environmental data for local, national and statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information for multiple teams across the Environment Agency.
The East Anglia Team is dispersed and we cover most of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.

Please note we are looking for an officer to be based at either Dragonfly House Norwich or Rivers House Kelvedon.

This is a field-based role and requires extensive driving in largely rural locations

  • Experience/skills required
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Experience/Skills required:

  • Field sample collection experience
  • Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
  • Good organisational skills
  • Working in water and from a boat confidently and safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
  • Required to use standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems
  • Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments
  • Training and mentoring staff

Desirable:

  • Electric fishing experience
  • Freshwater fish identification
  • Experience of biosecurity procedures
  • Contact and additional informationYou will be provided with a badged vehicle. Your base location will be either Dragonfly House Norwich or Rivers House Kelvedon where you will drop off samples most days. Most of the time you will be outdoors collecting data from locations across the team territory.
