Description:

Sterling Bio Machines is an early-stage startup developing new technology aimed at disrupting the biomanufacturing market. We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team and help bring the next generation of biotechnology to life.

About us

Our vision is to build a new generation of machines that will unleash the full power of biology to transform our planet. Biological processes have the potential to solve some of the most pressing threats to human to environmental health. However, outdated machines pose a critical bottleneck to the commercialisation of these bio-based solutions. Starting with our novel bioreactor technology, we are reimagining the machines that will power the bio-revolution at scale.

About the role

You will use your creativity, strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and experience of developing fluidic systems to accelerate the design of our novel bioreactor. You will envision, design, build and test proof-of-concept prototypes and associated test rigs. This will advance the robustness, usability and manufacturability of the system, progressing it towards the first product release. You will be working within a truly multi-disciplinary team, comprising experts in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), control systems, engineering, biology and bioprocessing. This role reports to the CTO.

In this role, you will focus on:

Conceptualisation and Testing:

  • Creating, testing and iterating novel concepts and designs for fluidic, mechanical and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Creating detailed 3D designs for bioreactor prototypes of varying sizes.
  • Using mathematical modelling and simulation tools to test and optimise designs.
  • Engaging suppliers and manufacturers to make and assemble prototypes and experimental setup.
  • Executing test plans, analyse results and iterate the design accordingly.
  • Driving the transition from proof-of-concept to product development, ensuring robust engineering practices to transform prototypes into market-ready products.

Key Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design and engineering of fluidic systems.
  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD design.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate innovative concepts and successfully bring them from ideation to implementation.
  • Proficiency in building and testing mechanical, electromechanical and fluidics assemblies and experimental rigs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and provide innovative solutions.

While not mandatory, prior experience working with biotech equipment would be advantageous. You should have a keen interest in applying your mechanical engineering skills to the field of biotechnology.

What we offer

  • Employee stock options
  • Pension plan

We believe building a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experience drives better performance. Even if you don't meet all of the above criteria but think you'd be a great fit, we'd encourage you to apply. We especially encourage applications from candidates who identify as female, a person of colour, disabled or LGBTQIA+, as these groups are currently underrepresented in the tech industry.

How to Apply

  • Submit your application using the form, this includes short answers to three questions and you will be able to upload any examples of your work you'd like to share at this stage.
  • The next stage in the process will be a video call with a member of the team.

Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis.
